Having worked for 13 years in the IT sector, I was able to continuously develop and improve my technical competences that build on a strong curriculum in the university and a degree in Computer Science. However, my interest was never strictly limited to IT and technical knowledge: I wanted to develop as an individual and an employee to cover new fields. One such field was management: during my years of activity as an IT programmer, I started to manage teams of developers and guided them towards the achievement of our goals, namely the development of a functional, bug-free software program.
Management is not only related to human-resource management. As a ream leader and team manager, I was the interface for the relationship between the upper management of our organization and the team I was leading. That meant that I had to use my communication skills to pass on the messages both top-down and bottom-up, but also to make sure that the programming team understood what the challenges were, what was required of us etc.
In the technical world, this often translates both into oral and written communication. The written communication takes the form of technical documents and there is usually one necessary characteristic that technical documents need to have: clarity. I have always written clear technical documents that contain the instructions for the developing teams and I think that this is one of the qualities that I can be proud of: being able to send out clear oral and written instructions.
As a manager and programmer, I was also faced, quite often, with problem solving and, even more importantly, with coordinating problem solving processes. Problems always appear in different phases of the system development life cycle with which I am familiar and one needs to be able to judge and analyze the situation and make the proper recommendations in terms of the solutions that should be adopted. I have done that, but I have done this through teamwork with the people I was coordinating, always looking for their own feedback and input into the matter.
I think that these paragraphs sum up into what I would call organizational skills. The development of a software product is a complicated process that involves not only team management and communication, but also the organization of these resources and tasks so as to be able to develop, on deadline, the product in the best possible conditions of functionality. However, I have analyzed my development as an employee and individual and realized that there is something missing, something that I can add to with an MBA in finance.
