Insights on Counseling

Working with an LGBTGEQIAP+ student has provided me with the insight that I must continue to be vigilant in addressing any systemic inequities they may face in order to create a safe and equitable school environment. Through my counseling role, I have taken intentional steps to ensure that this student is heard and respected, through affirming language and understanding their diverse perspectives. To further support this student, I have taken steps to create an environment in which they feel safe to express their identity and be their authentic selves. This includes pushing for more inclusive school policies, educating staff on the importance of using gender-neutral language when interacting with students, and engaging in ongoing conversations about how to foster an inclusive and accepting climate. I also continue to create resources for them such as information about local LGBTQIA+ support groups and organizations that can provide additional personal and professional support. Further, I work on engaging in regular conversations with this student and their family to ensure that their needs are being met and to create a supportive environment in which they can thrive.

As a school counselor, I have also taken steps to remove barriers impacting LGBTQIA+ students in my school through advocating for curriculum changes and resources that are inclusive of all genders, sexual orientations, and identities. I have taken steps such as advocating for curriculum changes and resources that are more inclusive of all genders, sexual orientations, and identities. I have also taken the time to learn about the unique experiences and challenges faced by LGBTGEQIAP+ individuals, so that I can better understand their needs and provide appropriate support. Additionally, I have collaborated with other professionals seeking to develop policies and procedures that protect and affirm the rights of LGBTGEQIAP+ individuals, and worked to increase awareness of the challenges they face and the importance of creating an inclusive and safe school environment.

Additionally, I have worked to foster healthy dialogues and conversations among faculty, staff, and administration to create a more inclusive culture. The development and maintenance of healthy dialogues between faculty, staff, and administration is essential to creating a culture of inclusion. Through these conversations, everyone can feel heard, acknowledged, and respected in their differences. Open-minded dialogue encourages empathy and understanding by allowing all participants to discuss their opinions and experiences in an environment that values diversity. This kind of dialogue also allows administrators to be held accountable for the decisions they make, ensuring that every member of the educational community is respected equally. Ultimately, fostering positive conversations between faculty, staff, and administration leads to a more inclusive culture that celebrates each individual's unique contributions.
