There is presently much controversy regarding sustainability and the diverse strategies people could use with the purpose of getting actively involved in helping the environment. The modern society has seven billion individuals and it is important for the authorities to be able to provide for the needs of these people. A great deal of crops and livestock are raised around the world and dominate most rural landscapes. However, the masses know very little regarding how these resources damage the environment as a result of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and methane gas.

Traditional agriculture has developed into industrial agriculture as society started to express more and more interest in experiencing progress when considering food production. Scientists have started to introduce additives as a means to increase the amount of foods produced. This means that foods that one can find at the local supermarket are likely to be heavily processed using substances that directly damage the environment. The downside about sustainable foods is that they are usually more expensive and thus make it difficult for some people to be able to procure them.

Biotechnology is responsible for changing the public's opinion in regard to foods and it enabled them to put across particular interest in eating organic foods. Genetically modified organisms presently represent a real threat to organic farmers and influence numerous individuals to consider that there is nothing wrong with them eating them. The fact that they are cheaper encourage the masses to buy more GMOs than organic foods and, as a result, influences people to be actively involved in destroying the environment.

Animal waste is currently one of the biggest sources of pollutants in the world. "Industrial farms produce massive amounts of animal waste that is known to release greenhouse gasses into the air" (The Issues). In addition to the fact that both animal and plant farming are responsible for polluting the atmosphere as a result of additives and methane being released on a daily basis, they also pollute indirectly when considering that they are transported around the world and the machines carrying them pollute heavily. People thus need to focus on consuming products that are produced as close to them as possible in order to contribute to assisting the environment. In the cases when foods are brought from other areas individuals would need to make sure that producers are properly compensated for their works, especially considering that it is up to them to create products that are as sustainable as possible.

The masses need to concentrate on consuming products that are organic, even with the fact that they are more expensive in the present. Organic foods are likely to become cheaper in the future if the authorities start to invest in them and if society as a whole understands that GMOs are extremely dangerous.
