For many years, tuberculosis was all but eradicated in the United States, however, in recent years it has begun to make a comeback. While researchers scramble to determine what is behind the recent rise in cases, medical professionals are working to battle its existence. M. Description of the Disorder
Before one can understand the steps being taken to battle tuberculosis, it is important to have an understanding of the disease itself. M. Tuberculosis, is a disease that is caused by the Mycobaterium bacteria. In most cases the bacteria attacks the lungs, though it has been found in other organs and areas of the infected body. Tuberculosis is spread through the air. If a person who has a case of active TB coughs, or sneezes, those droplets are sent through the air and anyone that is near that person can become infected.

History
The history of TB in the United States dates back to the 1880's at which time it was almost always fatal.

How it Spreads
While it is a commonly known fact that Tuberculosis is spread through air contact, there are many ways that it can become airborne. The most common method of transmission of course, occurs when an infected person coughs or sneezes and others come into contact with the air droplets.
When someone who has the disease in their throat or lungs sneezes and coughs the people nearby run a risk of inhaling those droplets into their bodies and therefore becoming exposed to infection.
When the infected person has TB in other organs than the lungs or throat they are not usually considered to be infectious to others. For example, a patient who has TB in the kidney or spine will not spread the disease to others even though it is an active disease.
Latent TB
There are people who breathe in the TB bacteria and do not become ill though they do present as infected when tested.
For reasons not completely understood by medical science, those people have the ability to fight the infection and not become ill. The bacteria does not grow in their bodies. Once they are infected however, the bacteria remains in that person's body indefinitely and it can eventually become active.

An active TB infection is defined as an infection that the immune system does not stop from growing. The bacteria attacks healthy tissue and destroys it. If the infection is in the lungs it has the ability to put a hole in the lung.
Symptoms of active TB include coughing that last three weeks or more, coughing up blood and pain in the chest. In addition, symptoms can also include weakness, fatigue, loss of appetite, developing a fever, having the chills or sweating at night.
