Systems Theory And Family Stress Theory Essay

Two Social Science Theoretical Frameworks

The two social science theoretical frameworks used by nurses when working with families in the communities are Systems Theory and Family Stress Theory. Systems Theory is an approach to understanding family dynamics which takes into account the interconnectedness of family members, the environments in which they operate, and how individual family members interact to produce a greater whole (Erriu et al., 2020). This framework argues that families need to be understood as holistic entities, with each members behavior having an effect on the functioning of the entire family. This theory can be helpful for nurses working with families as it allows them to analyze how interactions among family members influences their health decisions and behaviors (Tanhan & Strack, 2020).

Family Stress Theory is another theoretical framework that looks at the role of coping strategies, health behavior, and stress experienced by family members in their daily lives (Wu & Xu, 2020). This theory focuses on the different sources of stress that exist within a family, as well as how families can develop effective coping strategies to deal with the stressors. This framework is especially helpful for nurses working with families as it provides an understanding of how the family system works and helps identify potential sources of stress and how to address them (Wong et al., 2019).

To apply these two theoretical frameworks when working with a family, a nurse could first conduct an interview with the family to understand the dynamics of their relationships as well as any potential sources of stress. This information can then be used to create an ecomap, which visually displays the members of the family and their relationships with each other and the environment they exist in. The genogram displays the pedigree of the family, showing their relationships and potential genetic issues that might be present (Bokhare et al., 2019). After creating these maps, the nurse can analyze the family system more closely and create interventions that address any potential weaknesses or sources of stress identified in the interview. The following ecomap and genogram was created after interview a family of five. The ecomap illustrates the…

One must "initiate corrective actions when deviations exceed some preset level" (Kurtyka 2005). Process improvement is essential. It is not enough to meet benchmarks; a leader must enable the entire organization to improve in a synergistic fashion. Systems theory is actually used by some practitioners in domestic violence social work and counseling by being packed within the approach of "family system theory" (e.g. Nichols & Schwartz, 2005). This approach holds that the family is a holistic system where all parts are inextricably and holistically intertwined and each member of the family affects the other. The school and community -- outside systems -- too affect the family, and,
