Teaching
Besides nursing, teaching is perhaps one of the most noble and worthy professions a person might choose. Indeed, those who have a particular love for people and children tend to choose this profession. For this reason, a particular kind of love for a very specific demographic of children is necessary to be attracted to the special education classroom. Those who choose to enter this field of teaching will not only need to be aware of the specific reasons why they chose this profession, but also the challenges involved and the skills needed to handle these challenges.
My main reason for choosing to work in a special education classroom, for example, is that I care deeply not only about education today, but specifically about providing an effective education for those with special needs. The reason for this is that, by providing such an education, we open up the lives of such children to far more opportunities than would otherwise be the case. Like all children, children with special needs have a right to education, regardless of their capacity or intelligence level. In this country, we should never forget to further and improve the access of all human beings to their basic rights. Without these, the United States would not be the country it has become or support the democratic ideals it does. This is my main and primary reason for wanting to become involved in special education.
Of course, I am deeply aware of the challenges involved in teaching a class with special needs children. Depending on the nature of such classes, the challenges would probably differ. A "special education" class, for example, may refer to a class that includes children with special needs, but where all children do not have these needs. Indeed, some special needs children are included in mainstream classes because of the high level of their functioning or as a result of school policy that requires such children to be taught in an inclusionary way. The challenge involved here would be ensuring that all the children receive the education they need. I should, for example, ensure that children with a very high intelligence level experience education in a challenging and exciting way. At the same time, I will have to accommodate children with other levels of attention, along with those with special needs. Devising lesson plans that accomplish an effective education for each child in my classroom may be challenging in this regard.
Special education classrooms may also focus on a classroom composed only of special needs children. Here also, my challenge will be diversity. The concept of "special needs" may include many different categories of needs. ADHD children, for example, do not have the same needs as a person with severe limits on his or her brain capacity. I will need to devise activities that accommodate all levels of needs within my classroom. These will be my main challenges in working with such children.
I will therefore need a very specific skillset to work with special needs children. The first skill I will need is creativity. To work with children with special needs will require me to create activities that are fun and challenging for all the children in my classroom. I will therefore need creativity in order to provide these activities in an effective way during my work with the children and to create the activities in the first place.
