Teaching Adolescent How to Collect 24-Hour Urine Sample

There being the need to have samples of the urine from an adolescent every 24 hours, there is need to teach the patient the procedure of collecting the urine sample and correctly handle the samples and transport them to the hospital. It is also required that the teaching of the patient takes care of the age of the patient and the internal emotional disposition of the patient.

Teaching content

The following are the areas that need to be taught to the patient and evaluated if he internalized them are the significance of the sample to the treatment process, the correct spacing of the collection of the urine sample, the right and safe procedure for sample collection, the correct equipment for the sample collection, the correct labeling and storage of the urine sample and ultimately the safe and correct transportation and delivery of the samples to the hospital.

Teaching strategies

Being an adolescent patient, there is need to be conscious of the psychosocial conflict that he may be undergoing at his age and in effect, have an approach that would ensure the internal conflicts that the adolescent is going through with himself and the external conflict as he strives to find his identity against the role expected by the society (Cherry K., 2015).

One of the strategies that will be used is the oral presentation in a nurse-patient environment where the patient is given personal time and private space. This will ensure the developed ego by the adolescent especially regarding private issues and matters touching on their productive system is guarded and not bruised in any way. This will also ensure the concertation of the adolescent is retained by the instructor since at this age they are hyperactive and have a lot of things in their mind and would lose concentration fast if confined on one aspect.

The instructor will also use models to demonstrate how the urine can and needs to be safely collected. Since most adolescents are highly visual in their cognitive senses, the models will be very instrumental in ensuring the patient gets the finer details entailing collection of the samples. There will also be the use of videos that show the entire process of urine sample collection to ensure the patients fully understand the process. The open communication system will also be stablished between the nurse and the patient so that he is able to ask any questions or clarifications whenever needed bearing that the process is scientific in nature.
