Technological Advances Assessing Which Technological Achievement Has Had the Greatest Impact Of the many technological innovations that are having the biggest impact on the world today, tablet PCs and mobile devices capable of consuming and generating content are the most disruptive. While smartphone technologies set the foundation for tablet PCs and mobile devices, it's the rapid growth of software application on these devices that is revolutionary today.
Consider the fact that within just 28 days of the launch of the iPad, 1,000,000 had been sold, a common fact Apple often mentions in their press releases and media interviews. This isn't just a gaming platform or a device for getting on Facebook to update your status, it's a fully featured analysis and presentation platform as well. The use of the iPad within corporate finance to evaluate portfolios is becoming commonplace (Castelluccio, et.al.).
The iPad has definitely entered the workplace and is estimated to have over 80% of the enterprise market for tablet systems and platforms, dominating the corporate market (Geyer, Felske, 45). It is common to see iPads being used more than the traditional notepads in many business meetings as a result. Another disruptive aspect of the iPad is how many corporations are having their IT departments development applications specific to their own needs. This signals that many companies consider it to be more reliable, cost-effective and useful than their PCs and laptops.
When any company chooses to write their own application software for use internally, it says to the outside world that everyone from the Chief Information Officer (CIO) down believe in the technology. Another aspect of how disruptive this technology is the level of trust it is getting inside companies as a platform for financial analysis and financial planning (Castelluccio, et.al.). The iPad and its competitive devices are changing how businesses make decisions, and how they create their own new products as well.
Education is being revolutionized by the use of tablet PCs and smart devices as well. The iPad is now considered by many college and university students as the preferred approach to getting their textbooks delivered as well (Weisberg, 188). Thankfully the day is soon coming when all textbooks will be delivered electronically to the device of a student's choice, whether it is an Amazon e-reader like the Kindle or Fire, or to an Apple iPad, iPad2 or subsequent generation of tablet PCs they are planning today.
Instead of having to have a backpack stuffed with 50 lbs. Of books all that will be needed is a folder and a slim line iPad or Kindle to carry all textbooks from class to class. Universities continue to experiment with teaching courses entirely on iPads with Georgia State University's Robinson College of Business and Hult International Business School distributing entire course material including case studies and texts preloaded for students.
