Abstract

Technological innovations are marvel discoveries that play a critical role in improving human existence. This study identifies some recent technological innovations like ATMs, the Internet, and electrical vehicles and the role they have play in improving the way human beings operate. The study also identifies their historical developments, and the way they can be improved. From the study, it is worthwhile to appreciate the fact that life would be difficult without such innovations.

Technological innovations around the world have had a significant impact on the way of living of people across the world. The effects of technology to the society vary from one technology to another. This paper seeks to elaborate the influence three different technological innovations had on society. These innovations cut across different industries.

The automated teller machine

The ATM came at a time when banking halls were only for the elite. This is a networked device that offers financial services to clients. The transactions that can be accomplished through the machine include but not limited to cash withdraws, cash deposits, and mini bank statements. The supporting data networks allow users to access their bank accounts from multiple locations. This technological development dates back almost five decades ago. However, enhancement of the initial idea of self-service in financial institutions has made the innovation thrive over the years. The innovation made it possible for financial institutions to have 24 hours of service to their customers. This is instrumental in enhancing the reliability of financial institutions.

The convenience that is associated with the use of ATM is hard to achieve through the use of human resource only. The technology helped in reducing the workload of employees of financial institutions. Since the system is automated and interconnected, the accounts balances of the users are adjusted automatically after the completion of the transaction on the machine. The interconnectivity of the machines across a large geographical area allows clients to travel without the risk of carrying money. Cash withdrawals across different geographic regions offer convenience to both clients and financial institutions. However, the advent of the ATM in the banking industry introduced new risks to customers such as card fraud. These risks are mitigated through continuous enhancement of the security features of the automated teller machine systems (Fischer, 2011).

The Internet

The attainment of a global interconnection of devices within different computer networks has significantly influenced the society. The technological innovation that has its origin in the united sets government before the commercialization process has enhanced communication across the world. Over the years, superior networking technologies are being developed to enhance the capacity of data networks. The Internet has led to the rise of a new form of business known as e-commerce. This is where all transactions are carried out online and the items being bought sent via mail services or other means. Such business transactions reduce the cost of operation of an organization by a significant factor since there no business premises required. Moreover, the efficiency of online transactions in netting in customers from a broad market scope is high.

Telecommuting is another pertinent aspect introduced by the interment. When the cost of operations of organizations increase and the demand for human resource increases, techniques to make the workplace ideal are fundamental. Telecommuting allows employees of an organization to work from the comfort of their homes and only report to the organizational premises only when it is necessary. Through the Internet, employees can log into a company portal and get all the information necessary to complete a task from wherever they are located.

The rise of social media is based on the existence of the interment. Through social media, organizations can be able to market their products and accomplish different public relations goals. Social media as a marketing tool are cheap compared to other types of media marketing. Through social websites, individuals can be able to communicate with family and friends at minimal costs. The social media have also played a pertinent role in political revolutions such as the recent Arab spring. The Internet has been instrumental in changing the society through enhanced and quick communication options.

Electric cars and SmartPhones

The third technological development that has changed the society is the electric car. The design of electric cars has existed for close to a century, but the Toyota prius car started a new drive of electric cars. Electric cars are instrumental in reducing the carbon footprint of transportation across the world. Overreliance on petroleum-based fuels will reduce drastically as an electric car technology and production increases. Different carmakers have developed different designs of electric cars that are going to be competitive in the market (Kettlewell, 2004).
