Technology's role in improving global safety and quality of life

Technology has made the world a better, safer place.

Ever since the beginning of time man has been constantly evolving and building various tools that would assist him in his of her daily activities. The Stone Age marked the start of an era in which people would diversify their actions and in which society would not function properly without progress. As a result, people became addicted to finding means of exploiting the surrounding resources for the benefits of their community. The tools and technology invented got better with the passing of time and people felt the urge of improving their techniques. In the last two centuries technology has experienced a boom when regarding its evolution. Technology has broken a lost of barriers and with its help man has been able to leave planet earth and to explore the space.

It is understandable that technology has been created in order to make life easier for mankind and to help people in doing things that would be impossible if it weren't for the various devices dedicated to serving man. All of the instruments that man invented were not initially created to work independently, but only to be an extension to man's capacities. (Medawar) Man resorted to building such instruments as he discovered how the basic activities like hunting or fishing would be made easier with the help of special designated tools.

There are little chances of a present day man to be unfamiliar with the benefits of technology because it stands in everything that surrounds us from a cloth which is created with the help of processed thread and of a needle to a personal computer which is present in almost any home around the world. We now have what our ancestors only fantasized and wrote stories about and it is most probable that every dream that we now have will be reality in the near future. All this will be done with the help of the technologies which we continuously improve and are vital for many of our deficiencies.

There is much controversy concerning whether or not technology is good for humanity. People tend to question the benefits of technology because of the fact that over the years it has also brought some disadvantages next to the good that it did for our society. (Al-Homaidi) in their quest for finding new and better means that would benefit humanity, people have stumbled upon accidents that had disastrous results. The atomic bomb, dynamite, and similar deadly inventions are just some of the factors that prove that technology has sometimes had fatal effects. Despite the features that tend to put technology in a bad light, there are much more reasons for why people should be in favor of technological advance.

In the present days it is common for inventions to become mass produced only if they bring large profits to the companies that chose to produce the respective inventions. This happens mostly because investors sometimes care more about the money that a device brings them than about its efficiency. (Fruchterman)

The good thing about technology is that it is constantly evolving regardless to the circumstances in which people chose profit over efficiency. Technology is vital for humankind and without it there would almost be nothing with people not being able to support themselves and lead healthy lives without tools. It would be fair to say that technology is what makes the difference between a modern man and a savage.

There were cases in which people have attempted to leave technology behind and return to living in the forest. The most famous case is the Cambodian Red Khmer regime in which the communist leader Pol Pot attempted to take all of the Cambodians from the cities into the jungle where they were supposed to live honorably without the help of modern machinery. The action has disastrous effects and people died in horrible conditions.

There are a lot of people claiming that technology should not exist and that man can survive without it, but they admit that there are some advantages that technology brings. A most recent case proving technology to be beneficial is the innovative cancer vaccine which is presumed to come into mass production from 2010.

Technology has proved its efficiency during the last years also through the learning programs done with the help of the computers being brought into schools. Nearly every employer demands for his/her employees to be familiar to using a personal computer even if the job does not involve having to use a computer.
