Computer operating systems are split into three main categories. The first one is Desktop or Stand-alone operating systems, which are used by the end user on client machines and are independent of other operating systems. Windows Embedded or Windows IoT is a lightweight version of Microsoft Windows designed to run in embedded computer systems. It offers less features than the desktop version and is usually stripped down to the essential Windows features. This makes it take up a lot less space and work on systems with more modest configurations which are usually targeted at one thing only. Windows Embedded is usually used in industrial projects to control and automate different mechanical and electrical machine types.

It can also be used in home automation projects to control and monitor different aspects of the users home.
