Network and Asset Recovery Issues

Part 1 Network Cabling

The issues at The Sunshine Health Corporation are deep and profound as they will require a strategic approach that addresses the problems at their core and provide real and practical solutions to the rather difficult environment. This document is action plans that addresses the old wiring issues the building has, laying new fiber cable where necessary, and presents the idea of developing wireless LANs, and Wi-Fi capability throughout the facility. The plan is intended to be effective, efficient and economical and deliver real and sustainable cost savings in the long-term.

Understanding the Environment

The first and most prescient issue dealing with this case is the identification of what the building possesses and what if any of the old wiring and cabling can be salvaged. The more that is known about the content of the wiring structure, which was left in somewhat disrepair, the more the plan can be developed in a detailed manner. Regardless of what the building has, it is also essential to understand what the building needs in order to reach the objectives and goals that include total intranet and internet wireless capability for a 200,000 square feet warehouse. The first step must include identifying the problem and dealing with it in the most direct manner.

Step 4 Determining Cost Savings

Due to the lack of explicit knowledge regarding the actual components of the wiring and cabling it is very challenging to predict an exact cost savings plan. The aforementioned budget is a presentation of what is known at the present moment and could adjust in one manner or another. What is important is that there is an action plan in place that can identify a starting point to determine the overall potential of this building and its ability to function at its new intended purposes.

Part 2 Asset Recovery

When performing asset recovery operations within an organization it is essential for many reasons to have the security and privacy of the issue at hand be held in high respect. The wiping clean of hard drives was an important first step in the recovery process and more logistical matters can be addressed with a sense of security and freedom. The EPA also supports these efforts. They report on their website "recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by more than 3,500 U.S. homes in a year. For every million cell phones we recycle, 35 thousand pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered. Electronic products are made from valuable resources and materials, including metals, plastics, and glass, all of which require energy to mine and manufacture. Donating or recycling consumer electronics conserves our natural resources and avoids air and water pollution, as well as greenhouse gas emissions that are caused by manufacturing virgin materials."

To determine what is still usable at the Sunshine Health Corporation, it is necessary to take a careful inventory of what remains and classify that material to determine its ultimate destination. For a project of this scale it is necessary to construct four categories of classification. They are as follows:

Class I: Trash

Class II: Donate To Charity

Class III: Needs Repair

Class IV: In working order, available for future use.

The first step in recovering these assets requires a labeling process to determine the correct classification. This labeling will be performed room by room as this is the best way to organize a project of this size. Each room will be assessed for its technology equipment and labeled according to the four fold model presented earlier. This labeling could be assisted by assigning a color code to the label.

The next step of this asset recovery effort requires each classification of equipment to be dealt with in an appropriate manner. In the instances where different components that are still connected have not been disconnected and separated for processing this should be done prior to the room by room labeling. Each classification of material will be dealt with in the following manner:

Class I: EPA approved trash cans will come and collect all trash. This equipment will be disposed of in accordance with Federal and State regulations regarding the issue.

Class II: This classification of materials will be collected and delivered to the Local Charity Group that assists with abused children.

Class III: This equipment will be stowed in the IT workshop storage area and assigned a priority of importance of repair.

Class IV: Depending on the particular piece of equipment, the Class IV materials will either remain in the room, or be stored in the IT storage area for future use.

The final step in this process requires keeping an accurate inventory of the equipment managed by the Information Technology leadership group of the company. Such management of equipment will have been made easier if care and attention to detail are used in this recovery effort. Minimizing clutter and becoming an effective organization requires that the technology does not become a hindrance on the worker of the building. Keeping this important fact in mind will help with this recovery asset as well as the human resources aspects of the problem are addressed as well.
