¶ … tenth birthday, but I was not going to act as if this day was any different from the rest because I knew that every person who was close to me at the time already provided me with gifts (not necessarily material gifts) all through the year that had just passed. Even with this, I could sense something was in store for me and that my parents and my friends would not simply provide me with an ordinary birthday party.

Curiosity is probably one of the best words that can describe how I felt when it was my tenth birthday. While I appreciated that I had good friends and that my family was very kind to me, it was impossible for me, as a ten-year-old child, to receive presents and to be provided with special attention all through the day.

I believe it was around noon that my friends came over with a bagful of gifts. They were immediately followed by my grandmother who had the warmest smiles on her face - one could actually feel her radiating with love and kindness.

My mother then brought the cake and revealed the most beautiful bikes that I had ever seen (it was a small used bike, but the fact that I knew that it was mine made me the happiest person on earth). When I look back at this birthday party I realize that children are much more likely to be happy over small things because they are not necessarily interested in material values.

Back then I wanted to be older and I actually hated that I have to wait several more years in order to be able to behave like a grown-up. Little did I know that being older means being less happy and being more and more pressured by society's tendency to constrain individuals. When I stand to think about it, I actually believe that this was the greatest day in my life. Surely, other people might think about the day when they climbed the highest mountain in the world or.
