Another aspect of the unified command philosophy is that it is heavily grounded in trust. In the scenario provided, one of the most important roles will be recon to keep tabs on enemy movements while the forces move towards the offensive. The entire operation must trust these professionals to do their job correctly or the entire mission could be jeopardized. The engineering and logistical functions also have an equal amount of trust placed in them. They must be able to mobilize all of the necessary equipment, machinery, and gear to make the offensive effort functional. If there is something that does not work or shows up missing then again this could jeopardize the offensive mission. However, once trust is developed through experience and practice then the unit cannot operate as a team that performs seamlessly and can adapt quickly.

Section 2: Analyze and develop a doctrinal solution to a tactical problem.
*FOR THIS SECTION OF THE EXAM, YOU ARE THE 1/1 ABCT COMMANDER
THE SITUATION -- 30 minutes ago
1/1 ABCT is the lead element of the main body in the 1st Infantry Division's attack to seize OBJ FURY, a city 80 kilometers west of ROGERS. 1/1 ABCT as the division decisive operation was to seize OBJ FURY NLT H+12 in order to protect the II Corps main effort. The division's advance guard, 2/4 ABCT (attached to 1 ID), passed ROGERS without incident approximately two hours ago. In the period between 2/4's departure from ROGERS and 1/1's approach, the enemy quickly emplaced several obstacles (overturned vehicles and building materials) on RTE APPLE south of ROGERS to cause friendly forces to deploy assets early and disrupt movement. As lead elements of 1/1 ABCT approached ROGERS, they received consistent and accurate mortar and RPG fire from the city. The intensity of these fires increased as the brigade approached the outskirts of town. The remainder of the division's main body is approximately two hours behind your trail unit and will use RTE APPLE as well. The lead company of 1/1 ABCT took up hasty defensive positions near the bridge over the EAST RIVER on RTE APPLE while the 1/1 ABCT developed the situation around ROGERS.
THE CURRENT SITUATION
As your S3 reports enemy contact at 011900 MARxx to the Division Main CP, the Division G2 reports that a Redland maneuver brigade with two maneuver battalions (one armor with about 30 T80 tanks and one mechanized with about 36 BMP-2/3s) and one artillery battalion (18 2S3 self-propelled 122mm howitzers) have moved south of WAYNE and occupied assembly areas approximately 40km north of ROGERS in the last four hours. The G2 assesses this as a spoiling attack against the 1st Infantry Division's axis of advance. Additionally, the G2 estimates a company-sized irregular force (75-100 personnel) within the city of ROGERS equipped with mostly light weapons (AK47, SKS) and some RPG7V and 82mm mortars. The G2 believes this irregular force might coordinate actions with the Redland brigade to the north. The CG considers these developments a significant threat to the division's northern flank and the corps' future line of communication.
The CG contacts you with the following verbal guidance: "I am concerned about the division's northern flank and the situation around ROGERS. FRAGO follows: I want you to defeat the enemy on our northern flank to protect the division's main body. The duration of this mission is not yet known. 2/4 ABCT will continue as the division's advance guard, and 2/1 ABCT (currently approximately 30km behind your unit) will assume your previous mission as the division decisive operation."
Note: Citing doctrine is NOT enough to get credit for this assignment. You must read the situation carefully, and then apply principles of doctrine. After you have analyzed the situation, write a meaningful response for each exam question.
Directions: Use the attached sketch (last page) to answers the remaining questions.
21. Based on the situation and sketch, write the 1/1 ABCT's mission statement.
This mission statement was to send one armed unit to the south Rogers to break down defenses and prepare the environment for the infantry, and the rest of the support to arrive and be able to penetrate the city with a frontal attack on the south boarder.
22. Write the 1/1 ABCT's Commander's intent that supports this mission.
The ABCT's Commander's intent was to exploit the weak spot in the cities defenses. Although encirclement is generally preferred, the commander was able to devise a plan to exploit the weaknesses inherent in the city's south side. However, to do this the company had to first secure the bridge that would allow the Calvary to join the battle.
23. Using the map sketch provided, depict on the sketch how you visualize 1/1 ABCT addressing the tactical problem.
Ensure you address each of the following:
Identify the Key Terrain
Identify the offensive and/or defensive task for the ABCT and the form of maneuver and/or defense (as appropriate) to your tactical solution
Provide a task & purpose for each of your maneuver units
Identify the minimum Graphic Control Measures and symbols for your solution
Provide recommended location/employment of the MAIN & TAC Command Posts
The key terrain deals with the RTA Apple infrastructure. This is a key means to reaching the city effectively from both the west and the east. Other routes would encounter various enemy outposts. These could be overtaken, but the quickest and easiest way to the city is definitely via the RTA Apple.
The team must secure the bridge on the RTA Apple and set up a limit of advance so that they can position the rest of the forces in a secure location just south of the city.
The information that the south side defensive position may be attacked is a serious risk for the operation. The commander should send necessary backup for the defense to secure that position.
The command post should be set up on the west side of the RTA Apple at a safe distance from enemy fire.
* Continuation of scenario from Section 2 for Section 3.
Section 3: Sustainment
*FOR THIS SECTION OF THE EXAM, YOU ARE THE 1/1 ABCT BSB COMMANDER
Given that you are still in the early phase of planning, address the following:
24. Provide your vision for how the BSB will logistically support the ABCT's change of mission. Your answer must include a discussion of the planning considerations for Class III, V, Medical and Maintenance (35MM version). About a 1/2 typed page
The BSB will be able to support the ABCT's change of mission in many ways. One way is that it will be able to continue to collect intelligence and monitor the changing environment. Any changes then can quickly be relayed to headquarters in order alert them of the conditions on the ground. Other items in which the BSB will be able to handle in this particular mission is that the engineers may be able to quickly clear the road so that movement can proceed at an optimal progression. The reconnaissance team will also provide a valuable role as they can monitor the movements of the enemy forces to see if the intelligence that they got was credible and they should recalculate their strategy.
25. Depict on the sketch where you would locate the BSA and explain why.
[One to five sentences should be sufficient, a few more are acceptable)
I think the BSA should be positioned on the RTA Apple just west of the city. It should be far enough away that it is not in direct danger from enemy fire but close enough so that communication and intelligence can flow seamlessly.
26. Of the eight principles of sustainment, list the two principles you believe are most important for this mission and explain why. [Write one to five sentences]
The two principles of sustainment that I think are most important are logistics and responsiveness. Planning and executing the movement of forces is paramount to being able to launch an effective offensive mission. Furthermore, flexibility is also a key aspect of sustainment because hardly anything ever goes exactly as planned. Therefore, it is important to be responsive in a timely manner to the changes on the ground.
