Group Agrees Over the Decision

¶ … group agrees over the decision which develops negative consequences, such situation is responsible for the 'deterioration of mental efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgment' (Michael, 2003), the phenomenon is considered to be groupthink. The groups influenced by the groupthink, ignore alternatives and possible preventive measures which shall be exercised and practiced. The ignorance on the part of the group is responsible for the 'irrational actions that dehumanize', and eventually lead to disarray among the members. The groupthink is the uniformity of the opinion, and such uniformity emerge as a curse for the member groups because often relevant aspects are ignored due to the limited perspective shared by the members. The objective of the group work is to ensure that pluralistic and diversified opinions integrate to formulate compatible solution, and absence of the pluralistic approach and different frame of minds do not support the attainment of the targets. Groupthink is more or less fusion of different people with similar minds, which defy the concept of the groupthink. The first principle in successfully maintaining a voluntary development group requires that the perceived needs of group members be met at a satisfactory level. Effective group work is a balancing act in many ways, one of which is balancing individual benefits and organization outlines. In the given cases, the lack of understanding and ignorance towards the opinion proposed by the minority members resulted in the failure of the objectives formulated by the groups. The groups on their part did not agree over the thorough and descriptive review of the proposed idea, which eventually resulted in the expected collapse and failure of the strategy and objectives.

The groupthink can be minimized through maintenance of the voluntary development group, as per which, the 'perceived needs of group members be met at a satisfactory level' (Michael, 2003), it is also important to ensure that the activities of the group are efficient and effective, and for that purpose the group needs to practice balancing act i.e. 'balancing individual benefits and organization outlines'. The concept of the 'perceived needs' has to be revised, and members of the groups shall concentrate over 'benefiting the individual, the community, or both' (Michael, 2003), also the motivation level of the members shall be high, and shall be 'motivated by personal as well as community goals' (Robert, 2006).

The differences in the status develop adverse affect on the performance of the group, and contribute towards groupthink. The concept of seniority has always prevailed in the professional environment, and on different occurrences the concerns and proposals of the juniors / subordinates have been ignored or amended. Such amendments and ignorance has caused the groupthink, because the different idea was discussed but never considered only because the source was not credible. The credibility of the source avoids the groupthink, because now all the different minds are brainstorming, and each of them has the authority to recommend and challenge against the proposals. The ignorance which was nuisance has been removed. In a group where the people of equal status have gathered, have the sense and aptitude towards the relevant topic, the grouping of people with difference in status might not be productive, and the possibility of the singularity of idea, and acceptance on the basis of seniority are the elements of concern. The lower status member is less likely to oppose the debate and conduct of the group activities, which will develop groupthink. The lower status member is less likely to be among the dissenters because such act will offend the seniors, which will develop negative consequences over the performance and the professional association with the company and the high command.
