There are also issues of reliability and credibility that have to be addressed. For instance, one must ask whether a document is consistent with the truth or the reality and facts of what happened or if it is embellished or distorted by the author. One must also ask if author’s tone or perspective is trustworthy. As ideas are imbibed by the authors of documents in the past just like they are today, one has to decipher where authors are coming from, how they are viewing the world, what their ideals or principles are (for these are the basis from which judgments are made) and how these beliefs inform the actions of the individuals.

A primary source is helpful when studying history because it gives a concrete view into the past and is not an interpretation of the past by an author living today. Instead, it presents the views of people living in the past as they really were because it consists of the words of the people of the past. There is no filter or obstacle in the way between the researcher and the people of the earlier time. The document is a record of the individuals’ own thoughts and their perspectives. Primary sources can thus help a reader better understand a historical moment by presenting the moment as it really was without any bias or prejudice from modern day perspectives getting in the way of the information.
