The cultural activity I attended was a performance at Bell Auditorium in Augusta, Georgia, on November 9th, 2017. It was entitled “The Music of Journey” and, upon hearing the title, I expected to be taken on a journey of music throughout time. I was very surprised to see that it was actually the music of “Journey” the band that was formed in the 1970’s.The venue itself was nice. The one thing that stood out to me was that the floor seating had round tables with a centerpiece that looked like a candle. The arrangement resembled the kind of table arrangement that you would see at a fancy restaurant. The upper seating area where we sat was more of the traditional auditorium or stadium seating. At least this aspect of the experience was in line with what I expected—not that any of it was bad; it was just surprising.

826). There were fewer instruments in the SOA than would have been found in an orchestra arranged by Stamitz. Again, I was a little surprised by this and wondered what the effect would be. Once the performance started, I was really surprised at how big the sound was: the structure of the stage and the audio setup may have helped make the SOA sound larger than life, and the acoustics of the auditorium most likely enhanced the sounds as well. I don’t think anyone in attendance was lulled to sleep as the rhythmic, rocking sounds of the SOA performed the songs of Journey over the course of the night.
For me, the event was awesome. Though I’m not a big fan or student of the 80’s rock culture, I was surprised (again!) by how many of the songs I actually recognized. I felt like I was at a concert instead of a symphony, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I will say that the SOA certainly sparked my interest—and I will be attending more events like this in the future.
