Country Environment
Geographic factors
Malaysia is located in Southeastern Asia, peninsula bordering Thailand and northern one-third of the island of Borneo, bordering Indonesia, Brunei, and the South China Sea, south of Vietnam. It has a tropical climate with annual monsoons. The country's natural resources are tin, petroleum, timber, copper, iron ore, natural gas and bauxite.
Environmental factors
The most important environmental issues Malaysia is facing are represented by air pollution from industrial and vehicular emissions, water pollution from raw sewage, deforestation, smoke from Indonesian forest fires.
Social factors
The economic and financial crisis has affected Malaysia as much as it has affected other countries in the world. The crisis' effects were more severe on the poor (The World Bank, 2000). This situation can be observed by analyzing education participation rates, unemployment, and infant mortality.
The high levels of poverty in Malaysia can be attributed to the uneven distribution of income across the country, and especially in rural areas. Another social problem in Malaysia is represented by the large differences between groups. Ethnic Chinese and Indians are involved in agricultural businesses that generate higher incomes, while the Malay are doing the unskilled labor that pays very little.
The lack of education and resources has a direct impact on the age Malaysian women give birth for the first time. It seems that more and more teenagers become pregnant. The abandon their babies, which has become a national concern for the government.
Political factors
Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy. It is comprised of 13 states. It has a mixed legal system of common English law, Islamic law, and customary law. The executive branch is represented by the chief of state, the head of government, and the government cabinet (CIA, 2014). The legislative branch is represented by a bicameral parliament consisted of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The judicial branch is represented by the Federal Court and subordinate courts: Court of Appeal, High Court, Sessions Court, Magistrates' Court.
Organizational Analysis
BRAC's vision is "a world free of all forms of exploitation and discrimination where everyone has the opportunity to realize their potential." The organization's mission is to empower people and communities that are affected by poverty, illiteracy, disease and social injustice (BRAC, 2015). The organization develops and implements social and economic programs intended to help people exceed their condition and realize their potential.
BRAC's values are represented by: innovation (by creating opportunity for people to rise from their poverty through creative and groundbreaking programs), integrity (through transparency and accountability in its work), inclusiveness (by engaging, supporting and recognizing the value of all members of society, without discrimination), and effectiveness.
BRAC's approach seems to be exactly what Malaysia needs in order to deal with teen pregnancy and baby abandonment problem. Such a problem requires creative programs that focus on addressing the causes that determine the situation and allocating the resources that are required. Simply developing educational programs that are run as TV ad campaigns might not suffice in spreading the word and educating the right segment.
Regarding geographical areas of work, BRAC is involved in programs taking place in Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Liberia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Malaysia is the perfect country for BRAC to expand its activity to. This is a region that requires the help of social organization for fighting the numerous problems it is facing.
The audiences served by BRAC mainly refer to men and women affected by poverty, illiteracy, disease, or social injustice. Malaysian teens that become pregnant at very young ages and abandon their babies can attribute their situation to the low levels of education and to reduced financial resources. These women have little knowledge on contraception and family planning. In addition to these, they cannot afford contraceptive measures.
Social Business Ideas
Since the teen pregnancy and baby abandonment problem in Malaysia is determined by low information levels, a social business idea is to develop an awareness campaign. This refers to the prevention of cases emerging in the future in this country. The organization should identify the geographical regions in Malaysia with the highest teen pregnancy and baby abandonment rates. In addition to this, it should identify the areas where these people develop most of their activity, whether it is their neighborhood, their workplace, or local social places. The information on contraception should be offered to people in these places. This is because offering them such private information in a familiar place allows them to easier accept the idea.
Another social business idea refers to providing contraceptive products to teens that are sexually active. This is the second step after information on contraception has been offered. In this case, it is important to appeal to the help of local influencers that can reduce the resistance teenagers might express towards using contraceptive products. This is also intended to prevent the problem.
Regarding the treatment of teens that have already become pregnant, it is important to identify the cause that determines them to abandon their babies. The number one cause in this case is represented by poverty. The organization can support these teens in order to raise their babies by providing them food, clothes, and medication for their newborn babies. In addition to this, the organization can join forces with other social organizations in order to raise money that can ve allocated to teen mothers as a monthly amount.
