¶ … Project Management
The project parameters involved in overhauling a luxury tour bus, like any complex project, are bound by the limitations of scope, schedule, and cost. Also known as the triple constraint, a project's size, deadline for completion, and budgetary boundaries work in tandem so that a project manager cannot make alterations to one without necessarily affecting the others. Because controlling a project's scope is integral to effectively managing the other aspects of the triple constraint, many project managers prefer to develop a detailed Statement of Work (SOW) to clearly define every task necessary for project completion (Schwalbe, 2011). The following report details the impact of these limiting factors on the current luxury tour bus renovation project by examining each element of the triple constraint individually, while an SOW has been provided to describe the processes used throughout the life of the project.
Luxury Tour Bus Renovation Project:
Budget: A total of $10,000 has been allotted from the corporate budget to renovate the luxury tour bus. This amount includes the original $8,000 project budget estimate, and an additional $2,000 contingency sum intended to cover any unexpected expenses.
Schedule and Statement of Work (SOW): The 30-day project will begin on the 1st of April with an appraisal of the tour bus in its current condition, as team members identify all salvageable materials that can be preserved for future use. On April 3rd, the demolition process will commence, with team members removing old seats, windows, and other debris from the buses' interior. This process is scheduled to take two (2) days, and once the interior has been gutted the renovation process will commence. On April 7th a delivery of 30 new seats, a surround sound speaker system, soundproof windows, and specialty lighting equipment will arrive on-site, and the following day will be spend sorting the equipment prior to the installation phase. On April 9th, the crew of professional workmen that has been contracted will begin their installation, which is expected to last for approximately two weeks. This process will begin with a full electrical inspection and rewiring job (April 11th -- April 14th), before the speaker system and lighting equipment is installed (April 15th -- April 18th), finishing with the seats being replaced and refurbished (April 19th -- 20th). After the interior renovations have been completed, a final inspection will take place on April 22nd, and the following day will be spend addressing any troubleshooting or touch-up issues that were identified. Finally, a test drive of the renovated luxury tour bus will be conducted using actual clients, so that the quality of the newly installed features can be tested in their full capacity.
