Self-ASSESSMENT OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Intelligence

Overall, my emotional intelligence score is 82. Scores of 80 -- 89 are considered strong, and those people with scores in that range can count their emotional intelligence as a strong upon which they should continue to build. This is interesting news for me. Emotional intelligence is an issue in education and in the professional world that has garnered increased attention in the 21st century. Gardner's theory of multiple intelligence is now two decades old. At first, considered radical and tenuous, now is considered practical and growing increasing more necessary in order to function in this 21st century society, as well as a sought after commodity and skill. I do have confidence in my score, but very good scores are sometimes difficult. They are better than average, yet they are not outstanding. Very good scores require very fine tweaking in order to push them just a few points higher into excellence. I see it as easier to raise a score by twenty points that it is to raise a score by several points. It seems to me that the work is more apparent when the scores are lower. When a score is just out of reach of outstanding, it can be harder to find what needs to be improved. Overall I feel pleased with my score and I am curious about the challenge of raising my score even more.

With respect to personal competence, my score was 81. This score represents the overall, collective power of my self-awareness and my self-management skills. Self-awareness and self-management are skills that come with time and a diverse range of experiences, in my opinion. This score also relates to the ways in which I utilize emotional intelligence in situations that are more about me privately. This kind of serious level of awareness happens for many people during adolescence and persists hopefully into adulthood.

My self-awareness score is 82. This speaks to my ability to perceive my emotions and stay aware of them as they happen. This is something I see in others, which helps me. I see other people lack the ability to do anything besides feel their feelings. They cannot even communicate the feelings they are having; they are so overwhelmed. In order to move through situations well, we have to be able to feel our feelings yet still participate and move forward in the moment. I am not saying to ignore feelings. I am not denying the power feelings have. I am saying that being able to have feelings during an intense situation yet still be able to move through and resolve that situation, or at least exit that situation, is a necessary skill that I have actively worked on. This score additionally includes me keeping on top of how I respond to specific situations and certain people.

My self-management score was 79. This is a clear area where there needs improvement. This area relates to my ability to use my awareness of my emotions as a way to stay flexible as well as to positively direct my behavior. Self-management is related to self-discipline, and self-discipline is one of the hardest and most valuable traits to have. This is an area where I know I need to put more effort into and seeing the need for that effort in black and white in the form of a score is good motivation. I need to employ better strategies in managing my emotional reactions to all situations and people.

As for my social competence, the score was 84. This is one of the strongest areas for me and higher scores in my emotional intelligence. This scores refers to the combination of social awareness and relationship management skills. It is basically referring to how I am with people in social situations. This score moreover relates to another high score area for me: social awareness, which when considering the two categories together, is logical. Social awareness is my ability to accurately intuit or interpret the emotions of others, even when I do not share their emotions.

Finally, my relationship management score was 85 -- the highest of all. This is my ability to use awareness of my emotions and the emotions of others to manage interactions successfully. This is a very interesting score to me. This score tells me I might be good professionally in a coordination role or a role of a liaison. I would be good in a professional role where I managed people in groups revolving around an event or activity. I might be good in areas such as client relations, public relations, production management, event planning, or even human resources.
