Stem Cell Research Case:

Many people across the globe are experiencing a spanking liberty from affliction, disease, and infirmity due to the increasing frequency. As several people experience physical restoration and healing in their bodies, their lives are transformed forever with renewed hope and strengthened faith. The healings and physical restoration emanate from the miraculous cures of adult stem cell research despite of the ongoing controversies in mass media that tend to dismiss and obscure medical breakthroughs achieved by the adult stem cell research activities. Actually, adult stem cell research has been widely ignored due to ethical concerns though it has been successful as compared to the embryonic stem cell treatments.

Adult stem cell research is basically conducted on regenerative cells of the human body with the ability of plasticity i.e. developing into other bodily tissues (Hughes, 2004). Adult stem cell research has produced numerous exceptional results because the cells are not nebulously potential but they are real and tangible. These cells have been used to treat corneal degeneration, autoimmune diseases, and restoring vision in conditions of blindness. Furthermore, adult stem cell research has also been used for treating Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus.

An example of the successful treatment of diseases through adult stem cell research is the case of Mr. Dennis Turner who suffered from Parkinson's disease in 1990. This disorder affects the central nervous system where a part of the brain, substantia nigra, stops to produce dopamine, a chemical that enables effective motion in a person's body. Turner's condition was characterized by strong shaking on his body's right side resulting in near impossibility of arm coordination to an extent that he couldn't use his right arm. In the initial years of his medical condition, Turner underwent prolonged years of medication that made his condition to deteriorate gradually.

Mr. Turner's seemingly irreversible disease was characterized by the slow destruction of Dopamine Neurons, specialized cells in the brain. Turner's doctor, Dr. Levesque, took a very minimal tissue sample from the patient's brain and removed its adult neural stem cells. The doctor then multiplied and developed these cells into Dopamine Neurons before injecting them back to Turner's left side of the brain (Turner, 2004). Dr. Levesque recommended the treatment of the left side of the brain only because it controls the body's right side, which is mostly affected by symptoms of the disease.

Following the injection of the cells, Mr. Turner's symptoms of Parkinson's disease started to improve as his trembling became less and less to the extent that it disappeared completely. While Mr. Turner could not state what his condition could have become without the adult stem cell research treatment, he was certain that the surgical procedure enabled him to enjoy several years of quality life that could have him by ("Parkinson's Patient Helped," 2009). The adult stem cell research yielded successful treatment results since it was safe, involved no risk of injection, and effective.

Mr. Turner's case is an example of an ethical case that involves adult stem cell research because of the used procedures and patient outcome. It's an ethical case because the stem cell research was used as a means of providing real treatment and providing hope to the patient who had suffered for many years. This case can also be regarded as ethical because there was not transfer of the stem cells from another human as the doctor used the patient's own adult stem cells for the surgical procedures. The outcome of these procedures was not only positive to the patient but they were also positive to the medical professionals resulting in great happiness for both of the involved sides.
