Trace the Development of Bipolar Through All

Last reviewed: August 7, 2011 ~3 min read

Trace the development of bipolar through all three structures of your memory, according to the Dual Store Model. At each stage, give the verbal or visual stimulus and the cognitive processing for transferring information between stages.

The Dual Store Model of memory, also known as the Multi-Store Model, was first proposed by Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffrin in 1968 and holds that memory formation and storage is comprised of a series of stores. These stores were termed Sensory Memory, Short-Term Memory and Long-Term Memory and were used to describe the flow of information through the brain's memory storage system. The totality of information we experience moment by moment, what we see, smell and hear, is instantaneously detected and forgotten, unless it the stimuli is paid further attention. When this happens, the information is transferred to the brain's short-term memory via the process of auditory encoding. The process of recall is used to facilitate the transfer of memories from short-term to long-term. Semantic encoding imprints the information and the rehearsal/retrieval process allows a person to consciously remember stored memories.

2.) Describe the use of encoding, elaboration, and organization in storing in your Long-Term Memory one of the Theories of Learning.

When transferring memories from short-term memory (STM) to long-term memory (LTM), the brain engages in a process known as encoding to ensure effective storage. Encoding occurs at different levels, from the shallow level of storage gained by structural encoding to the deeper processing inspired by semantic encoding. The encoding of memories to our LTM can be strengthened by a subconscious technique known as elaboration, which describes the automatic association of newly experienced information with previously stored memories. It is this process of organization, or linking the waves of new stimuli our brains receive every minute to experiences we have already had, which allows memories to become stored in our LTM, allowing for vivid, detailed recall even decades later.

3.) Give four possible explanations for the forgetting the concept of modeling.

4.) Develop a mnemonic for learning the Retrieval Cues, as either Serial Learning or Paired Associate Learning. State the cues, the kind of list, and the mnemonic.
