¶ … moved to Puerto Rico, away from my family and friends, I had no idea of the hardships that I would face. Because of them, I am writing to you today to ask for your assistance in allowing me to transfer back to where my home is. Please, allow me to tell you why this is so important to me and my future. My ex-fiancee is from Puerto Rico. I met her in college, and we fell in love. After my undergraduate studies I moved here with her. We thought that we would have a wonderful life together, but she soon began to struggle with the demanding school schedule that I had. She also saw the life that my mother and her mother were living, and they are both married to physicians. She decided that she could not live that kind of life -- that it was not what she wanted for her future. Because of this, she grew distant, and we drifted apart, finally ending our relationship. This was very painful for me, but I understand and respect her decision. She must do what is right for her own life and her own future, and I realize that I cannot control that. However, despite my continued respect for the choice that she made, I now find myself alone in a foreign country where I basically know no one and have no close ties. This is very uncomfortable for me, and I am concerned that my studies will suffer from it. If I were back among my family and friends, they could help me with this struggle, but there is no one here that is able to do that for me.

I feel that this experience has taught me a lot, because I am learning very early on about the sacrifices that I must make for this profession. I knew that sacrifices were required, but did not understand when I moved to Puerto Rico how painful those sacrifices would be and never expected them to cause the loss of the woman that I loved deeply and intended to spend the rest of my life with. I will not give up my medical studies for her, though, because my love of medicine is very strong, and I want to get through my schooling and make a career. It is the one thing in my life that I still have to hold onto, and it means everything to me. The studies are often difficult, but they are also very rewarding, and medicine means so much to me that I do not want to jeopardize my learning by facing depression and heartache during my studies by remaining isolated in a foreign land. Unfortunately, I already feel that this is happening to me, and I see only one way of improving my situation, getting on with my schooling, and making myself feel whole again.
