Understandability of Controlled Burn: The Gendering of Stress and Burnout in Modern Policing Results
The results presented in the article are understandable because the authors have presented the result in a well detailed and formulated manner. The article has clearly indicated a number of factors that are directly associated with law enforcement. The authors have also identified some of the major causes of stress and burnout to police officers. By categorizing the factors according to gender, the authors have shown how different factors have an impact on different individuals. For example, it has been shown that women are more stressed when they hear they have to undergo internal investigations as compared to men. Presenting data in this manner makes it easy for any reader to understand and differentiate how various factors would impact individuals based on gender (LoBiondo-Wood, 2014). There have also been differences noted based on race. African Americans will have different stressors as compared to White Americans. The authors have managed to demonstrate this within the article and this makes it easy to understand the results they have presented.
The authors have shown that they had a good sample to work with for the study and this is positive since the results can be easily quantified. The number of respondents has been categorized based on four grouping namely White male, African American male, White female, and African American female. By using this categorization, the authors have been able to separate the effects of gender and race and point out how the different races and genders are affected by the same stressors. It is worth to note that the results demonstrate that there are clear differences been noted and this has been well presented by the authors. separating based on the four categories has allowed the reader to understand the results and relate well with what has been presented. At the start of the results/findings, the authors have begun by presenting the population and they have gone a step further by breaking down the population numbers based on the four categories that had been identified. This allows the reader to understand the respondents’ population and have a clear picture of how the population was spread. After grouping by the four main categories, the authors have also provided the education levels of the respondents as it had been noted in other studies that education does play a vital role in stress and burnout.
Several regression variables have been used by the authors to ensure that readers can better understand the complex relationship that exists between the various stressful situations and gender dynamics. Making use of tables has allowed the reader to better comprehend what the authors have established in their study (Labani & Asthana, 2015). Tables make it easy for people to understand the data being presented and this has assisted the reader. After the tables have been presented, the authors go ahead and present explanations on the results. Therefore, one is able to relate to the data. The explanations offered by the authors can be understood by all readers. The findings presented by the authors are also relatable considering that most of what the authors have spoken about is a vital topic, especially within law enforcement. The results of the study have mirrored what other studies carried out to establish the effects of stress within the police force have found. The authors have managed to identify the main stressors and they have gone ahead and focused or tailored the questions in order to identify the impact that these stressors would have on a police officer. All officers were asked the same questions and the results were then separated to factor in the race and gender. Apparently, the results indicate that almost all police officers are highly stressed when they are the subjects of investigation by their department.
The authors have managed to point out the main stressors for the four identified categories and this is nice because one can easily understand what is leading cause of stress for African American female or White women. This separation has been noted to be beneficial because it ensures that there is no generalization of the gender or race. This separation as noted within the article is beneficial in that one can see that there are major differences on what would be cause for stress and burnout for an individual mainly based on their gender. The authors have also presented the separation of gender results in two separate tables for stress and burnout. The gender separation allows one to understand the interplay of stress and burnout on the different genders. The impact of stress and burnout on gender is vital because this was the main focus of the article. Omitting this presentation would result in the results been less understandable and readers would not have related to the information presented.
Recommendations for Presenting the Results for Use by a Police Executive
A majority of executives do not have the time to read through all the wording of a report or the results of a study. They are mostly time pressed and they would prefer to receive only the key highlights and recommendations. It is for this reason that most reports and articles will have executive summaries that allow individuals who are pressed for time to read through the executive summary and understand what the report is about and its recommendations (Gregor & Hevner, 2013). To present the results of the article to a police executive, one has to understand that they might not understand some of the statistical jargon used and they might skim through the results without fully comprehending what the authors intended. Therefore, it is vital that the results be communicated in a less technical manner and using terminologies that the police executive could relate to and understand easily. This will ensure that they can be able to implement the results of the study. The findings of the report should also be shortened to ensure that the executive is able to grasp the results without having to spend too much time reading the whole article or its findings. This way they can understand what is required of them and they will not have to spend considerable time or pass over the article's results since they do not have the time.
The results of the study should be presented in bullet format. This way the police executive will be able to read through the bulleted points and make his or her own mental notes. Bullets make it easy for one to read through a document and they can understand better if the bullets are shortened (Klychova, Zakirova, Mukhamedzyanov, & Faskhutdinova, 2014). For the police executive to make use of the results, he/she needs to understand them and make a strategy of how they are going to implement the results. The results as they are right now are quite impressive and structured well for other researchers and individuals interested in the topic. However, for a police executive who would like to implement the results, they would find it hard since the results do not make it easy for one to see a clear pathway of how they can go about making the changes. Executives prefer to see actionable points and without this, they find it hard to comprehend the results. Actionable points of the results could be presented in a power point slide and ensure that the presentation is not too long.
As a rule of thumb, one should begin presenting the results with a summary of the key findings and attempt to catch the executives attention. Attempting to start the results presentation with terminologies that they do not understand will result in the executive getting lost from the start and they will not be able to implement the results of the study. The introduction of the results is the most vital part as this will hold all the information that is key to the executive. It is for a reason that they have spared their time to peruse through the results and if they cannot be able to comprehend or understand how the report is beneficial to their squad they will toss the report away. In most instances, the executive will have asked for the results of the study, and one should give them what they have asked for. It is of no use to present to the police executive information or data that they have not asked about since they will be unwilling to read.
Using visual aids have also been shown to be quite effective in communicating to executives. Most executives will understand and remember visual presentations than they would with text. Therefore, one should ensure that they have as many graphs and charts in the results section to ensure that the information is well understood and received by the audience (Wincup, 2017). In order to implement the results, one has to understand what is been communicated and a failure to pass on a clear message will result in the failure to properly implement the report. In as much as the graphs and charts are supposed to complement the text, executives will appreciate if the results have more visuals than text. Also, this makes it easy for them to glance over the report and understand what is been communicated.
