¶ … UNEP or United Nations Environment Programme is an agency coordinating environmental activities, aiding developing countries in the implementation of environmental sound practices and policies. Their biggest issues right now are climate change and generating a green economy. Founded by its first director, Maurice Strong, the agency came to be as a result of the 1972 United Nations Conference on Human Environment. It has headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya within the Gigiri neighborhood and has various country offices and six regional offices.

Several activities the agency is responsible and cover are issues pertaining to terrestrial and marine ecosystems, atmosphere, green economy, and environmental governance. Some of the major roles UNEP has played have involved development of international environmental conventions, promotion of environmental science as well as illustration and information of the way those subjects can be implemented alone with policy. The agency also works on the implementation and development of policy with regional institutions and national governments in conjunction with NGOs or environmental non-governmental organizations.

Lastly, UNEP helps implement and fund environment-related development projects. The main priorities of the UNEP as it relates to projects and partnerships are: 1. Climate change 2. Disasters and Conflicts 3. Chemicals and Waste 4. Ecosystem Management 5. Environmental Governance 6. Resource Efficiency 7. Environment Under Review 2. UNEP's recent news articles focus on economy, more specifically "greening" foreign economies.

One of their latest articles cover the attempt at greening Peru's economy through integration of green growth into the nation's development policies and how it can aid countries like it, in promoting environmentally sound and efficient use of resources. Another article discusses economic sustainability and performance through innovation in transportation systems, mainly public transport. A third discusses the topic of renewable energy citing South Africa's decision to opt for wind and sun energy demonstrating green energy investments increasing in developing countries.

The last article discusses ending illegal trade in wildlife and how the agency plans to team up with Xinhua to achieve this objective. Essentially the themes are: 1. renewable energy 2. greening the economy 3. ending illegal trade in wildlife 4. green economy Economy and green energy development/investment are the main concerns. As the world continues to progress, innovative ways to serve the energy need must be undertaken without harming any further the planet's delicate environment.

By greening the economies of developing countries (a main and central theme connecting all of the recent news articles) there will be more progress towards creating environmentally sound policies and practices worldwide. Countries in developing areas have expanded their use of technology, agriculture, and other things that have a detrimental impact on the environment. The UNEP's goal is to push this development in the direction that will take into consideration the needs of the planet. Because technology and agriculture often bring destruction of wildlife and wildlife habitats and pollution.

This is something that has to be avoided at all costs. 3. The UNEP site connects business and consumers to current environmental problems. Consumers can see the impact they have on the planet by reading the environmental-themed news articles and help fund any future or current projects the UNEP wish to undertake. Businesses wanting to understand their impact can also venture to the site and learn how to brand themselves in a way that promotes environmental sustainability ie, big data.

Big data enables corporations to use less resources in order to gain a clearer perspective in what customers want and need. Business and consumers can also learn about the Green Economy Initiative and how they can green their businesses or practices to promote "green living." Consumers may venture to the site to educate themselves in ways they can voice their concerns to their respective governments about policy change, green transportation, renewable energies, and waste management. These are key issues that require attention across the globe. 4.

UNEP appears to lack the wherewithal to carry out many of its goals. While the UNEP mentions in articles their partnerships with other agencies and organizations, there are no articles that demonstrate actual results. It feels as though policies and changes in policies are not made due to the actions by the UNEP, but rather for economic purposes. Nations want to move away from their dependence on oil as a fuel source. Developing nations are just.
