Diversity in UNICEF
Diversity is a term that UNICEF, the United Nations Children Fund, embodies in its spirit, its spread, and its activities. This does not mean that there are some benefits -- and some challenges -- that could be brought to the organization by increased varsity amongst its volunteers and employees, and in the programs that they offer in the nations of the world. UNICEF works to prevent disease, promote education, and provide emergency and ongoing relief for children and families in need, and whatever the challenges the benefits of diversity (UNICEF 2009).
UNICEF is well aware of the increased productivity that comes with diversity; their hiring practices mandate fluency in English and at least one other UN working language (Employment 2004). The more multilingual people working for the organization, the more effectively they will be able to coordinate international programs, and the organization as a whole will have greater flexibility in their deployment of workers during a crisis. Fundraising work, an essential element in the effective operation of any organization, is also aided by diversity -- one recent fundraising effort took the form of a festival with international fashions, dances, and foods on display, not only displaying the diversity of the organization but also taking advantage of the multicultural world we live in (Reeves 2009).
There are also challenges UNICEF faces as its diversity grows. The English requirement of its employees is necessary at this point to facilitate easy intra-organization communication; as the diversity of operations and volunteer networks grows, speakers of other languages will become more vital, yet difficult to find amongst English speakers. Non-English speakers will become necessary, and this will make communication more difficult for the organization.
