¶ … Union Address 2011
The January 25, 2011, State of the Union Address put across President Barack Obama's expectations and interest for the coming year. The event was particularly different from earlier State of the Union Addresses because many members of the legislature went against traditions and did not sit with their own parties. Obama did not hesitate to stress the importance of reform all across the speech, as one of his main intentions is apparently that of maintaining tradition by keeping the U.S.' position as leader of the world.
Like it is customary every year, a House representative officially invited the President to deliver a State of the Union Address, this being a reference to the fact that the American leader appears before lawmakers without actually expressing his intention to do so before. One of the reasons for which members of both Houses were reluctant to stand alongside of their colleagues is the fact that they wanted to display their compassion toward the assassination of several Representatives in the recent years.
Obama's intention regarding restructuring the country's system is obviously influenced by events involving the U.S. In the recent years. The President does not attempt to ignore facts and shows an increased interest in decreasing the country's vulnerability, both from an economic, social, political, and military point-of-view. Although propaganda is a politician main weapon, Obama's allusion to how he admits the country's deficiencies demonstrates the significance he attributes to matters involving the U.S.' lost ground in front of its competitors. Many are likely to consider this event to be a sign of weakness shown by the President, as it might seem unwise to relate to the country's faults, given that competitors can easily exploit such a matter. Even with that, considering present day conditions in the U.S. And across the world, it would be absurd to ignore the nation's defects.
The fact that he did not put across any concern about changing matters regarding the War of Terror is however likely to bring on a series of critiques, with many Americans having lost their interest in supporting the conflict. Obama partly recovered for his involvement in the Middle East through his specific claim that he intends to fight any nation or individual that displays any signs of wanting to pursue or make use of nuclear weapons.
