Uzbekistan Growing Rapidly and Yet

Last reviewed: October 1, 2006 ~5 min read

Uzbekistan growing rapidly and yet fails to offer aspiring young financial professionals the wealth of options available in the United States. Although I currently manage a production team of twenty-eight people, and I enjoy a secure and promising career with a leading manufacturing firm in my home country, I seek the experience and education that will enable me to work as an independent financial analyst and consultant. Without the necessary stepping stone of higher education, I could not develop the skills and contacts required to become a successful entrepreneur and effective professional whose skills were competitive in the global market. Being able to help corporations like Tashrostrans grow and thrive in the global marketplace motivates me to obtain my MBA and apply finance skills and working contacts toward developing a successful enterprise of my own.

With an undergraduate degree in finance earned in Uzbekistan, I was hired at Tashrostrans as an economic planning specialist, a far more creative and exciting job than I had ever imagined. With the help of my mentors at the firm, I translated company financial data into meaningful projections for the future with the express intent of improving the company's ability to compete globally. Early success at Tashrostrans encouraged me to continue in the field of finance because I witnessed the meaningful results of effective financial analysis in helping companies meet their goals and grow. Tashrostrans senior managers reviewed my early projections and the specific suggestions I made based on the financial data, and although I was a junior member of their team the team of senior managers implemented my ideas.

For example, I suggested creating a new department specializing solely in quality control and quality management. My suggestion was based on a thorough analysis of different Tashrostans departments that needed improved controls. When I brought my suggestions to the board in 2004, I was given the chance to create the new department myself.

As a result I became the youngest manager in the shortest period of time at Tashrostans and I believe that my early success with financial analysis will help me succeed in the MBA program. Core roles of our quality control department included motivating management to be more accountable and to improve the quality of inter-departmental communications and thus I demonstrated leadership skills. One of the ways we have accomplished those goals is through it changes such as improved networking systems: I understand the role of new technology in improving organizational efficiency. Improved networking also signified deeper changes in the organizational culture that I believe will permeate into all sectors of the Uzbek economy. With a global mindset I seek to expand and broaden my skills with an MBA.

As it forwarded my career, the new department I helped create also represented a huge step forward for Tashrostrans. The goals of the quality control department demanded a revision of the corporate structure of the company, and Tashrostrans senior management welcomed structural changes in light of their commitment to stakeholders. Being involved in such a major transformation of a leading Uzbekistan firm in my early twenties proves my dedication to the profession and my ability to succeed as a financial analyst. Recently I received a promotion at Tashrostrans and became the Division Manager of Security Seals. Leading a 28 member production team, we ensure that our products meet ISO and TU federal standards for quality. I will continue to help companies like Tashrostrans compete successfully in the global market, both during and after I receive the MBA.

Two of my friends from Uzbekistan attend BYU's MBA program inspired me to apply to your program in particular. After investigating American universities in depth and having spoken with Ivan and Eve, I focused on the Marriot School of Business for the following reasons. First, I want to attend a small school where I can interact personally with classmates and staff and collaborate on team projects that mirror the real world. Second, the Wall Street Journal ranked BYU's commitment to ethics as second in the nation. Your institution's commitment to business ethics remains the key factor in my decision to apply and my desire to participate in your unique campus environment. An education at the Marriott School of Management will allow me to interact with individuals from around the world in a diverse and challenging environment and will also permit me to infuse my work with integrity and ethics that are rare in the competitive graduate school environment. At the same time, BYU offers a rigorous and traditional curriculum, necessary to accomplish my goals as a professional financial analyst.
