Nowadays people tend to be careful about the food they are eating. Some of them choose to be vegetarians; and some of them choose to be omnivores. In my opinion a healthy diet is one that finds itself somewhere in the middle. I do not agree with the total elimination of meat from a diet, and in my opinion you can still be a vegetarian if you eat meat once a week.

Not all vegetarians eat the same, and that's why they are classified in: vegans, lacto-ovo vegetarians, pesco vegetarians and semi-vegetarians. Vegans are the ones who don't eat animal products. The second type of vegetarians, called lacto-ovo vegetarians, consume along with vegetables, dairy and eggs. Pesco vegetarians eat fish, but don't eat meat or poultry. The last type of vegetarians is semi-vegetarians, who eat meat less than once a week.

Although researches have been made and experts said that a vegetarian diet is healthier, they are not so concrete because they assumed that vegetarians are all eating the same, and they didn't take in consideration the all fourth types. Research has showed that vegetarian people are healthier than non-vegetarians. Vegetarians live longer than non-vegetarians and vegetarians also present a lower risk of being diagnosed with diabetes and heart diseases. Other unconcluded research has said that vegetarians also present a lower risk of cancer colon. Red meat is believed to increase risk of colon cancer.

A vegetarian is healthier not necessarily because he avoids eating meat or diary, but because the products that he or she is eating are full of fiber, nutrients and protective compounds. To be healthy, the human body needs protein, and this can be found also in many plants but also in meat. Grains, nuts, soy products, seeds, beans contain protein, but the meat contains the complete protein. The complete protein includes the entire amino acids that the body requires. There is only one plant source that can provide the complete protein, and that one is soy beans. Other vegetables need to be eaten in combination for providing all the amino acids that the body needs. Consequently if you can obtain all the amino acids from the vegetables you can exclude the meat. If you eat only meatless products and substance you will need to eat several meals per day, to provide for your body the necessary amount of protein.

Another reason why a vegetarian is healthier than a person who eats meat regularly is due to an activist lifestyle. A vegetarian person tends to be more physical active than a meat person.

On the other hand meatless products can't provide all the vitamins and minerals for the body. For example calcium and vitamin B12 can't be provided in a sufficient amount for a healthy body if you have a vegetarian diet. Therefore people who eat only meatless products and substance must provide vitamin B12 from medicines.
