Mayoral Decision
A group of our town's most prominent Christian leaders has come to the Mayor's office, asking that we allow them to erect a Nativity scene on the city property in honor of Christmas.
At one time this was considered a complex issue involving separation of Church and State. However, that issue has been settled by the Supreme Court recently, when they required that the Ten Commandments, something used by major non-Christian religions as well as Christian ones, from a courthouse, because it implied a religious connection to the judicial system.
At the same time it seems silly to completely ignore the fact that at least 80% of this town's population celebrates Christmas in one way or another. The Mayor's office feels that it should support all people in our multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-religious town, but that this should be done in a way that shows respect for all practices and belief systems. Therefore, the Mayor's office proposes that we establish a committee representing all groups of the city. This city can determine how all populations in our town can most fairly be represented. The Mayor suggests that these be representatives from the business community. The Mayor's office should not be used to promote any religious beliefs, but support of the business community is appropriate, and we recognize that holidays are often accompanied by an upsurge for all kinds of businesses in our town.
