Walden\'s Concept of Academic Integrity

Last reviewed: September 13, 2013 ~4 min read

Walden Community

Like any academic institution, Walden University has certain explicit values relating to academic integrity. The fact that these values are made explicit, and that they relate to the official APA set of principles relating to academic honesty, provides a platform for individuals who work and study at the institution to develop a uniform and internationally accepted ethical approach to academia.

As a scholar-practitioner, I expect to develop a number of my personal attributes for the mutual benefit of Walden and my own academic and professional development. The values of honesty and trust, for example, go hand in hand. By proving myself honest in my work with both texts and human beings, for example, I will develop a sense of mutual trust involving myself as individual, those who lead my research efforts, and those who are yet to arrive at the institution and benefit from th work I accomplished. Trust is also a vital component of fairness.

Academic honesty and trust are closely associated with fairness. In working with students, it has always been my aim to provide feedback that is both fair, honest, and useful to the student for his or her own future development. In developing relationships with students that are based on fairness, it is my aim to develop myself further as instructor as well as lifelong scholar and learner. I expect that my sense of fairness will also lead to mutual respect not only between myself and learners, but also between myself and my colleagues. Respect also extends to an open-minded vision of developing and exchanging ideas. I expect to learn much from others, especially when their opinions and viewpoints differ from mine.

In general, I expect to be accountable for all my actions, while also holding those whose work I supervise accountable for their own adherence to the values of academic integrity at Walden.

As mentioned, these principles are universally recognized and appear in some form at all academic institutions. In my professional career and development as scholar-practitioner, I expect to apply these values wherever my profession and my life take me.

I believe that my work to dat as adjunct professor will help me to contribute significantly to the academic community at Walden. During my years as doctoral student, for example, I built skills as counselor, trainer, instructor, and consultant. My highly developed verbal and written communication skills will serve me well both in classrooms and in research.

I have also built a significant amount of leadership skills, as well as skills in problem solving. I have, for example, helped my professional associates accomplish better efficiency and streamlining in their operations. I expect to apply these skills wherever I see a need for them at Walden.

In my work at Fashion Fair Cosmetics, I have built relevant skills such as training and development, as well as business development and management. These are skills I would like to develop in terms of the university environment as well. I believe I can contribute much to management entities at the campus and look forward to the challenges involved in both my immediate professional environment and related areas that my work as scholar-practitioner will touch.
