Weapon security accountability in military operations

Last reviewed: February 20, 2011 ~3 min read

Weapon security in the military is of prime importance for many reasons. First of all, the issue of weapon security is not only personal but something that affects the entire group collectively. Individual weapon security is the first step in collective security. Secondly, lack of weapon security endangers those outside the military, as they could be harmed by an unsecured weapon or use it to harm themselves or others. Within the military, as it functions as a seamless unit, weapon security is crucial not only in accomplishing the goals and objectives of the unit but also as the personal responsibility of the individual to his fellow soldiers and those around him. Weapon security is a necessary component of training just as much as it is a necessary part of the individual military action and effectiveness. A unit is only as effective as its weakest component, and lack of weapon security weakens the entire group of soldiers.

The military is made up of many individuals working together as one cohesive, focused unit. A mission or objective can be compromised for the entire group of these people through the irresponsible or sloppy actions of the individual. In this way, the collective unit can be harmed if just one single soldier is not focused on crucial priorities like weapon security. If one weapon is not accounted for or not secure, the entire group is endangered. This is the soldier's own personal responsibility and reflects on the professional image and actions of the soldier himself. The military unit is a professional, collective fighting force, and only as cohesive and secure as the individuals are able to maintain it themselves. This security and professionalism are crucial components to the success of the mission and to the safety of everyone involved and just as vital to the mission as proper training, planning, execution, and follow through. Therefore, it is of vital importance that weapon security be maintained to help ensure a professional image and reputation.
