¶ … web development tools available today, what are some advantages and disadvantages of these tools?

Most web developers today are expected to have knowledge of basic HTML, Flash animation, Adobe Photoshop, and the ability to display animation and short film clips as part of the graphic design of a website. But is it always wise to use all of these elements in designing a web page, simply because one has a web developer capable of doing so? Although innovation is always desirable from the point-of-view of the eager designer, the website owner must not lose sight of the purpose of the website and the core message of the site's product. The website must be deployed with an eye upon the site's mission, the product's consumers, and with art as well as technical artistry.

Although these web developments can add a variety of exciting visual components to the website, none are completely without problems for users. For example, Adobe Acrobat can be difficult for inexperienced designers and thus be clumsily deployed, and also can be difficult or time-consuming for certain web browsers to open, causing systems to freeze up and thus discouraging users from accessing the site again. Flash animation or Real System Streaming Media can be difficult for slower dial-up users to access. The more technically advanced and eye-catching the technology, the fewer the users who will be able to access that technology speedily -- and even persons with the fastest cable modems might not wish to view an entire animated advertisement, as opposed to something they can see with a point and click of a mouse.

Even if the users has the capacity to see the technology, websites filled with pop-ups and other 'bells and whistles' may be so overcrowded that viewers may be unable to assimilate all of the information on the site, or even understand the purpose of the site. Sometimes more is simply more, depending on the product message and the target audience of the site. The advantage of using the most cutting edge technologies, such as Flash and the most advanced versions of Adobe, is that they have the ability to make the website stand out against competitors and imitators, but they must be deployed with a purpose, and not for technology's sake.

Skills must be honed that create a functional page that users will view and use as the client hopes them to. Many new Web designers produce Web pages that seem to ignore fundamental principles of "good design": full of colored backgrounds, animated pictures, multiple colors and styles of text, and little to no navigation or Web-based structure. Even in courses devoted to Web design, students still produce pages that lack
