Welcome Letter Please develop a set of guidelines Welcome, new international students! No doubt, all of you are excited about your new adventure in the United States. You are probably worried about many things, including unpacking, trying new foods, and finding your classes on campus. Many of you may also be wondering about how you will meet new friends. On our college, as is the case with all American campuses, students are very friendly and willing to provide information.

Even if you are from a culture where it is not considered polite to talk to strangers, don't worry about asking an American student where the cafeteria is or even if they would mind joining you for lunch! American students may be louder, more willing to make eye contact, and more willing to touch you on the shoulder than might be expected in your home country. Don't be offended. Also, if you feel uncomfortable, don't be afraid to speak out.

Americans generally would prefer to know if you are doing something to offend them. In America, women and men may be more familiar than you are accustomed to see in your home country. Once again, if you are not comfortable, you do not have to imitate your fellow American students. But be aware that this is not meant as an offense to you, and also if you see a man and a woman arm-in-arm, they might not be dating.

They may be 'just friends.' America is a very diverse society, and this is reflected on our campus. Because of America's great diversity, you will see a variety of individuals of different races, creeds, and colors. Most of the world's major religions are represented on our campus. You should feel free to express your own beliefs, but be respectful of the thoughts and values of others.

We hope that you will find friendships amongst the many groups represented at our university, because we consider this a quintessential part of the American experience. We also hope that you will be generous enough to share your own traditions, foods, cultural observances, beliefs, and habits with us, to enhance our collective learning experience. The classroom is likely to be very different than what you experienced in your home country.

If you are fluent in English, you may feel confident that you will be able to understand everything that is going on around you. But the way that classes are conducted in the U.S. are very different than how they are managed in other regions of the world. American students are actively encouraged, even expected to disagree with their professors and to debate with them (Wood 2009). This is very difficult for some foreign students to accept, given that it might be seen as disrespectful. Don't worry.

Conflict is not seen as something 'bad' that must be avoided. From conflict, we believe that learning can take place, provided disagreements are addressed in a respectful manner. When writing research papers, don't be afraid to ask for help. Sometimes, expressing yourself in English academically can be more difficult than expressing yourself socially.
