Life experience and preparation for an air traffic control career

Last reviewed: July 28, 2003 ~3 min read

¶ … job of an air traffic controller is without a doubt one of the most demanding and pressure-filled out there. Controllers are responsible for hundreds of lives each day, both on the ground and off. The way I see it, the job of an air traffic controller requires a number of personality and character traits, but most importantly, he or she needs to be communicative, sharp, and decisive.

Communication skills are vital for air traffic controllers. Their job requires them to be in constant communication with a number of individuals at one time. They are required to correspond with others both effectively and concisely. I have developed the ability to communicate in this manner from my social and academic backgrounds. In terms of education, I have learned how to present ideas and information succinctly. Through both essays and speeches, I have attained the ability to convey relevant ideas, while "weeding out" information that is not necessary for supporting my main points. Socially, I have been able to translate my academic skills in a more "real world" environment. I can employ the same communicative skills in a more casual or non-academic environment (such as that of an air-traffic controller).

Sharpness is a given when considering the quick exchange of information. In a field like air traffic controller, every piece of information one gives or receives has merit. When directing hundreds of lives in the air, attention to detail is of paramount importance. I have developed this skill both in school and past employment. I have the ability to focus on my tasks, and exchange information with the utmost accuracy.

Finally, an air traffic control needs to be decisive. This personality trait is probably the most difficult to define because decisiveness can be bad if employed improperly. The importance of accuracy should not be underestimated when considering quick decision making. However, my experiences have allowed me to develop both decisiveness and accuracy in my decision making. Pressure is something I have dealt with since a young age -- from sports, school, and even social interaction. Pressure results from the need for decisiveness. My experiences have taught me how to cope with pressure, and make those important decisions when only given a small window of time. Not only is my decision-making quick, but it is also accurate. I would go as far as to say that my decision making is at its best under pressure.
