¶ … ability to better myself from my humble beginnings. As a child my family was very poor, nonetheless my parents instilled in me great respect for hard work and perseverance. These important and lasting beliefs and ideals have been a major influence on my behavior and attitude and have served me well in all situations.
In 1995 I was eighteen years old. That year I failed to get into India's best engineering exam (ITT) twice. This failure was initially devastating, however I now see this as a vital necessity for my training in order to become someone who can reach my full potential and even go beyond what I thought personally possible. Every failure offers an opportunity to learn from your mistakes. The lessons I have learned are the building blocks for the success I have experienced to date, and the success that will accompany me for the rest of my days.
The failures of my eighteenth year caused many people, even those I considered friends, to discourage men from pursuing my goal. At the time my family was broke, had no money and was in debt. However, my mother, who was not educated herself, always set me back on the path, "Education is the biggest strength" she would say. By this she meant that through education a person has power as well as choices. Education opens the window to opportunity. It was her encouragement and faith in me that gave me the strength to renewed my ambition.
Along the way there were many obstacles to overcome in order to get myself and my family back on track. This was a time of profound struggle for me and my brother. It was during this tough time God took both of our parents. Still I endeavored to succeed, studied hard, and kept my dream in my heart. I was fortunate to benefit from some financial aid from an India company and in received my master's degree in 2004.
My three greatest accomplishments so far have been getting my degree, helping my brother and overcoming failure and discouragement. Today I am settled and only wish my parents could be here to see the accomplishments of me and my brother. I hope where they are they see us and are proud of the people we have become. I believe you cannot allow failure to destroy you. Failure rather should be used to build you, to transform your character, crystallize your dream, and transfix your determination to succeed through the power of persistence and the fortitude of faith.
