Although present day society has experienced much progress when concerning discrimination, the masses continue to be influenced by stereotypes and prejudice often governs people's thinking. Many attractive individuals are favored in a series of evaluative situations and it is actually difficult for someone not to feel that a particular person is good at what he or she does simply because the respective individual in beautiful. A prince and basically any individual who holds a title on account of his background does not necessarily need to look good, as he or she compensates through his other attributes.

Shrek is most probably meant to influence the masses in accepting the fact that people should not be judged on account of their looks. In spite of their physical appearance, Shrek and Fiona are both intelligent and humble, and they are nothing as people perceive them to be. Even with this, Fiona is initially unable to realize that love does not depend on appearance. She is influenced by society's pressures and has trouble understanding the complex nature of love. This often happens in the contemporary society, as many people are persuaded into sticking to a series of standards that make it imperative for them to put across certain behavior, follow certain trends, and appreciate particular individuals.

The story of "Beauty and the Beast" is one of the most recognized accounts relating to society's values. It focuses on the Beast as he tries to put across his true nature to the people that he interacts with and constantly fails because these individuals judge him on account of his physical appearance. In spite of the fact that he appreciates him, the youngest daughter of the merchant is unwilling to marry him, as she believes that it would be wrong for her to marry such a grotesque character.

The ancient story involving Eros and Psyche also deals with the concept of beautiful as being equivalent to good. Psyche is tricked into thinking that her lover is actually a serpent who actually wants to consume her and her child when it will need to be fed. Even with the fact that she is familiar with her husband's character, Psyche listens to her sisters and cannot possibly live with him as long as she envisions him as a monster. This demonstrates that humanity had long considered this debate and related to it with the purpose of having people understand that beauty does not necessarily make a person better, as he or she should be simply judged on account of his or her attributes.
