Cold War Policy: the U.S.S.R. And the U.S.

Historians have long argued about the cold war and whether it was really inevitable. Also argued about is which country was more aggressive in the policies and tactics that it used during that time period. American foreign policy was one area where the country was very aggressive and it resisted the expansion that the U.S.S.R. was trying to make at the time, which created tension between the two countries. However, the foreign policies of the U.S.S.R. were also very rigid and aggressive, and historians throughout the decades since the cold war still cannot seem to agree on which country started it and why and how. Realistically, both sides were very aggressive regarding their policies and neither country wanted to give any ground to the other country, which appeared to be opposing them at every turn. It would be difficult to say, however, that one country was more aggressive than the other, largely because what one country did regarding this issue generally affected the policies of the other country, as it tried to ensure that it would stay dominant or at least equal. If forced to choose, though, it would seem that the U.S. was more aggressive, simply because it fought so hard to keep communism at bay and ensure that it did not spread to other countries. The real reason that the U.S. And the U.S.S.R. were both so aggressive during this time appears to be that there is simply so much difference between democracy and communism, and both countries thought that they were right in the way that they did things - that no one else's ideas would work or would be just as good or better than theirs. Some of the struggle also came from the desire to have power. The U.S. And the U.S.S.R. were the two most powerful nations in the world when the cold war began and both countries were fighting to stay on top and be the most dominant country. This led them to increasingly aggressive tactics to try to gain the upper hand, but the U.S. was more severe about what they did then the U.S.S.R. was in most instances.
