I can show up for a job that I have earned through my hard work without knowing that I have to overcome assumptions that I am less qualified than any other new hire; and 3. I can offer to help someone with a task like home repair or vehicle maintenance without eliciting either complete shock or appreciation that turns out to me much more patronizing than genuine. However, I also appreciate what the author refers to as the "advantages" of my status a female because I am much quicker to receive offers of assistance, for one example, should I drop something in public or have to fix a flat tire. The principal reason that I do not think the article suffers from any failure to further develop the genderism issue is precisely a function of my view about the most appropriate manner to deal with the issues faced by double (or triple) minorities. In fact, doing so, (especially with respect to those most affected by particular kinds of prejudice), may actually perpetuate...

In my opinion, personal identification exclusively (or largely) with the issues facing one's own race, or gender, or other basis for unjust treatment by the majority is itself another form of prejudice and purposeful disenfranchisement of every other minority group. If our society is ever to overcome all forms of prejudice, I believe it will be by effective teaching of objective principles about equality, justice, and fairness rather than by focusing on the rights of African-Americans, or of women, or of Jews, or of the poor, one issue or one group at a time. In my opinion, it is a mistake to promote racial "pride" (for example) for the very same reason that racism is immoral in the first place: race is entirely irrelevant to human worth. In my opinion, therefore, African-American leaders and feminist leaders who devote their lives to the specific cause of "their" groups accomplish much less to benefit all minorities than they might by leading efforts against all forms of prejudice on principle, rather than because one form happens to affect them more than other forms.

White Privilege and Affirmative Action White Privilege Some people believe that the color of a person's skin matters a great deal in this world, that this racial marker determines the opportunities and potential successes that a person may have in their lifetime. Many people, particularly those who belong to historically marginalized groups such as African-Americans, Native Americans, or Hispanics, believe that being Caucasian or white guarantees an individual certain rights and privileges

One of Peggy McIntosh's most profound observations is that the white privileged class, though it can choose to engage with, learn from, and attempt to understand developments in minority writing, music, arts, and culture, it is essentially insulated from any of the possible negative reflections of these developments (McIntosh). That is, though I might personally enjoy listening to rap music, I do not need to worry about what the

Additional (86-87) explanations for racism / discrimination: a) the socialization process (if the parents are racists, the child growing up learns to hate certain racial groups); b) economic competition (when security is threatened, prejudice can come into play; Blacks and Czechs in some instances were biased against Vietnamese immigrants because the Vietnamese were supposedly taking jobs away from those already here in the U.S. And in Czechoslovakia). Liberal feminism, often called middle class feminism

A black woman walking up to the counter at Macy's will be a customer, not an American-American customer; a Latino buying a car at a used car lot in Memphis won't be a Mexican-American he will be a customer. That's how it should be. THREE: Why is the focus so different between male authors and female authors? For the same reason that men see the world from a very different
