¶ … Desire to Pursue a Dental Education

My desire for Dental School admission is basically based on my desire to help the less fortunate members of our society. As an immigrant to this country, I have faced many challenges during the last few years and know from experience what it is to be of unfortunate circumstance.

I was born and raised in Korea. In 1996, during my 10th grade year in high school, my family and I moved to the United States. During my first three years in this country, I faced many difficulties and challenges adjusting to a new language and culture. However, I have learned that persistence and dedication can overcome most of life's challenges. I have succeeded in adjusting to the American culture and have mastered the English language. Moreover, I have excelled in my studies.

After high school, I began my educational studies by enrolling at Santa Monica College. My goal was to transfer to a prestigious university such as University of California Los Angeles, UCLA. Again I discovered that persistence and determination enables one to accomplish most challenges. I was able to transfer from Santa Monica College to UCLA with Dean's honors.

My current major is Biochemistry. I will graduate with my degree in June 2003. I also am currently working in Dentistry as an assistant. I received an honor from Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society for my volunteer work to community services. I also received a Scholarship Award in June 2000.

As a dental assistant, I have witnessed many dental techniques such as fabricating crowns and sterilization.

A also see many people who cannot receive proper dental treatment due to financial difficulties. This has given me cause to reflect and consider how to help those in need. Thus, I have set my goal to become a professional who can help bridge the gap existing in society. As a dentist I will be able to help many who, due to particular circumstances, cannot afford proper dental care.

I have overcome many challenges and difficulties since I have been in the United States. However, I have met each challenge with determination and persistence, and have always succeeded in my goals.

To some, that suggests that college is a more viable alternative for many of those who would otherwise have sought jobs in the manufacturing sector previously. However, there are at least two reasons that such a conclusion may be invalid. First, while many manufacturing jobs have disappeared, many other types of technical jobs opportunities have emerged from numerous new technologies (Klein, 2012). Many of them require vocational degrees and certifications
