Sony Corporation has been in operation for nearly seventy years. It is a company that provides a variety of consumer and professional electronics including audio and video equipment. The homebase of the Sony Corporation is in Tokyo, Japan. Though Sony is consistently a leader in the industry, the company is relatively small and keeps their employee count very low relative to other companies who may be larger in staff and may be a competitor in a similar industry. What are the reasons why Sony Corporation continues to excel and to provide leadership in the industry? A portion of that answer has to do with the mission statement of Sony Corporation.

The mission statement of a company or organization provides the foundation for how the company will grow, how the organization will be structured, and how the employees will behave within the organization. The mission statement of a company proclaims and reflects how a company perceives itself and what kind of brand or image of itself it will project to consumers and competitors. Sony is first of all committed to manufacturing a plethora of products. This provides consumers a range and a catalogue of choices. Consumers enjoy having a choice. From a western perspective, choice is very much conducive to capitalism and democracy. Such characteristics are appealing and sustain customer loyalty. Not only is there a great deal of products for consumers to choose from, but also the products and services are innovative. For Sony, it is not enough to be a company that provides products and services that are practical or useful, but also push the envelope with regard to innovation, creativity, and imagination. This is a company that specifically wants to challenge the ways consumers access and enjoy entertainment technology. Sony wants to understand ways consumers access and enjoy this kind of technology and entertainment historically and presently, and then invent new ways for this to occur, especially into the 21st century.

A keyword in Sony Corporation's global mission statement is synergy. Synergy is basically when two or more elements work together to achieve goals or objectives that would otherwise be impossible to achieve without the collaboration. Though there are distinct departments to Sony, just as with any corporation or organization, Sony intentionally works with a collaborative and interdependent spirit as part of their business practice. Synergy must contribute to the unparalled success Sony has seen in its decades of operation/existence. Synergy is one of the organizational elements that helps Sony stand a part from competitors to achieve worldwide recognition, respect, and worldwide consumers.
