Wildlife Ecology and Conservation
There should be a balance between books and journal/periodicals dealing with the subject of Wildlife, Ecology and Conservation that appeal to an interested audience, but in different styles. These are divided into: 1) Scholarly or Academic Journals, 2) Periodicals, 3) Books.
Ecology and Society -- This journal is a broader topic journal that deals with integrative science, ecology and sustainability. It focuses on land and water ecology, opportunities for sustainable development, and exploration of multi-disciplinary opportunities in the sciences surrounding fish, wildlife, and flora. This would be useful to the center because it provides a wider background of material, while still remaining scientific. http://www.ecologyandsociety.org/index.php
Journal of Fish and Wildlife Management - This journal is published and managed by the United States Department of the Interior and is specifically devoted to the manner in which governmental issues impact America's natural resources and cultural heritage. This would be a vital journal to have because it specifically deals with issues surrounding Fish and Wildlife, but more importantly, governmental efforts on parks, recreation, ecology. http://www.doi.gov/index.cfm
Journal of Wildlife Management- This is a professional journal that has been part of the scholarly community for almost 100 years. It focuses on advances in ecology, quantitative methods and wildlife management. This journal would be important because it focuses on scholarly issues and would help the organization stay current on important academic topics. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)1937-2817
Periodicals
Conservation -- This periodical is published by the University of Washington and is a bridge between total academic/scientific journals and a more lay approach (with pictures, drawing, etc.). The topics range from issues surrounding pollution to the impact of fast food on local ecology. The material is current and would be important due to the importance of broadening the views of the Texas employees to include more social aspects of conservation. http://conservationmagazine.org/?gclid=CLabtcHDgLoCFaFxQgodrl4ATA
Scientific American- Also a bridge publication meant for either the educated or advanced lay community, this publication is important because it helps clarify complex scientific research in all fields in an understandable manner (even Albert Einstein contributed to the magazine). http://www.scientificamerican.com/
Books -- For the library, the books should be more reference in focus since many materials become dated so easily. The books chosen should be well respected within the field and contribute to the needs of the organization:
1. Tri-part set: Texas Wildlife, Texas Birds, Texas Trees and Wildflowers -- Nature guides written by James Kavanagh; illustrated and laminated for field use. See: http://www.amazon.com/Texas-Wildlife-Introduction-Familiar-Species/dp/1583552545/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1381005255&sr=1-2&keywords=texas+wildlife
2. Hodge, L. (2000). Official Guide to Texas Wildlife Management Areas. Austin: Texas Parks and Wildlife Press. Overview of Texas' 51 wildlife management areas including detailed descriptions and locator maps.
3. Kareiva, P. & Marvier, M. (2010). Conservation Science: Balancing the Needs of People and Nature. New York: Roberts and Company. More of a textbook, but an up-to-date reference on conservation science, particularly the role of balancing development with conservation principles.
