¶ … Violence as a Form of Workplace Violence Are your coworkers aware of the term workplace violence? My coworkers are significantly aware of the workplace violence and the different forms that it can take like the bullying of new employees, gender-based bias, unfair workload allocation and outright discrimination. The employees are often sensitized on the issue of workplace violence and given literature that elaborates the government stand on the same.

Do your coworkers know what constitutes lateral violence? My coworkers are aware of what lateral violence is within the workplace and they can make the difference between it and bullying. The lateral violence as known within the organization is the act of unfair treatment or unjustifiable handling of a colleague within the workplace. The coworkers know that it happens among the coworkers at the same ranks unlike bullying which is widely considered as originating from one in a higher position or rank directed towards an individual at a lower position.

Lateral violence can be in the form of verbal abuse, non-verbal abuse, covert aggression or even in many occasions outright violence and harassment (Massachusetts Nurses Association, 2015). Does your facility have a clear reporting process in the event of workplace aggression? The facility where I work has a clear process that need to be taken by each employee in the event that they feel harassed or an act of aggression is targeted at them.

Indeed, at the point of reporting to work for the first time, each new employee is given the employee handbook which, among other details, outlines what workplace violence is and the steps an individual needs to take in the event that they are harassed at work.

When an employee feels harassed by either colleague of the people under whom they work, he needs to immediately notify the nurse management after which the nurse management will duly notify the human resources management who will investigate the matter and take the necessary steps thereafter. The entire process is normally handled with utmost confidentiality that will allow the protection of the victim.

What are the repercussions should individuals report an event that makes them uncomfortable? There are several instances where the aggressors realize that they have been reported to the management by a given individual or victim and there are several instances that instead of the aggression ceasing, the aggressors goes to be more offensive and change their harassment tact.

They may choose to use other means different from the openly noted ones, they may harass them in secrecy like through the internet or even subtly that may harm the victim but not constitute legal penalties being taken. The management on the other side will definitely consider the aggressor as a nuisance to the organization and follow each step he takes to study whether he has changed or may repeat the same with other victims, and if the employee becomes intolerable, he may be forced to leave the organization.

Does your facility offer mental health support? The nursing facility where I work offers the mental health support for employees and is referred to as the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). The EAP works in close collaboration with employees to offer them a mental stability and psychological comfort in an environment that is known to be stressful and full of challenges due to the fact that nurses do work long hours and with patients of all sorts from different backgrounds. As the management offer, the first three visits that.
