Hunger is the worst manifestation of poverty among the population since families that don't have food security cannot afford to acquire any other basic needs leave alone the secondary needs and wants in general. It is estimated that this year alone there will be some 4.5million people worldwide who will die of hunger. A few of these deaths will be from hunger but majority will be from opportunistic diseases that will take advantage of the lowered immunity due to malnutrition like diarrhea, malaria and measles.
It is however worth noting that bearing the large farms on some countries, added to the Genetically Engineered Food we can preempt that hunger is not caused by lack of food or its availability but by inability to purchase that food, inequitable distribution of the food and also a lot of politics dictating the production of food (what is produced where and how much), who produces it (who produces what) and for what purpose it is produced (for personal export and wealth).
There are countless dangers that hunger exposes the society to today more than ever before. The chronic hunger/food insecurity devastates families and countries at large each year. Hunger devastates more than famine itself, indeed it is sad currently to read of the people dying in countries like Kenya of hunger.
Increased Infant mortality rate: is one effect of hunger, women end up having small babies susceptible to diseases and eventual death. This makes the women want give birth to other babies to replace them leading into a ceaseless malnutrition and death vicious cycle.
Susceptibility to diseases: is another danger since the children get malnourished and dehydrated consequently wakening their immune system hence cannot survive acute attacks of diarrhea and other rampant and recurrent infections.
Vulnerability during disasters: is another danger since this groups is merely eking life and any unexpected shakeup to the status quo like crop failure, epidemics, typhoons, floods and other acts of God deals a massive destruction and eminent death in droves.
Hindrance to development: since children depend heavily on protein for their development, lack of it may mean that they end up stunted in their growth and development. They end up being shorter than they should actually be. This also affects their intelligence which has been studied and found to be lower than well fed children. It is estimated that 22 million children are stunted in their growth worldwide.
Economic consequences: it is estimated that 67 million children are malnourished which effectively means they will not achieve the expected schooling level like any average child, and if they do, it could be late. The repercussion of that is that they will not be able to earn at equal rate as other age mates who are not malnourished, with a continued cycle, he economy of the society will end up suffering.
In order to bring an end to hunger in the world, there should be systems put in place that protect the weak and vulnerable from organized rogue groups and protected multinationals that construe the food production process to their own evil desires.
There should be very well managed and coordinated trade especially on food items so that the third world can reclaim good use of their land hitherto alienated from them just like the developed countries. This will ensure increased food production among the third world countries and the developed world hence no shortage or crisis of transportation.
Hunger can also be fought through growing of foods that are labor-intensive, high in calories/protein since the children need the essential amino acids that are therein. This way the nutrition among the children will increase hence a possible escape from hunger.
