The history and influence of the Templars did not end with these confessions and executions. To Philip's "dismay" (92), the story seemed to gain power now that it was a legend. In fact, it is recorded that when de Molay was burning, he spoke and cursed Philip. The history of the Knights Templar is riddled with obscurity and doubt. While we know that they did exist, we must wonder what happened to such a powerful and prominent Order. Certainly, the Templar was at one time a well-respected and useful Order in Christendom. The one event that seemed to be liked to the demise if the fall of the Holy City. The result of this fall is two-pronged for it immediately rendered the Order less significant and it also proved their inability to uphold their mission. Without his interference, there is not telling what might have become of the Order but his greed was far too powerful to put aside. His ability to use his power to weaken these men through torture only reinforces his cold-hearted nature. He might have succeeded in destroying their order but he did not destroy the truth for which they stood and faught.
