1. Screening Mammography

Mammography plays a central part in early detection of breast cancers because it can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them. Current guidelines recommend a screening mammography every year for women, beginning at age 40.

Research has shown that annual mammograms lead to early detection of breast cancers, when they are most curable and breast-conservation therapies are available (Mammography).

2. Diagnostic Mammography

Diagnostic mammography is used to evaluate a patient with abnormal clinical findings such as a breast lump or lumps that have been found by the woman or a doctor (Mammography).

Routine Mammogram Saved Her Life

Following a routine mammogram in July 1998, Debi Koon received a call from her physician saying there was an area of concern in one of her breasts. A follow-up visit and second mammogram the next day both identified an abnormal area. A biopsy taken shortly after revealed that Debi was in the early stages of breast cancer. Since it was detected early there were more treatment options.

Debi was hospitalized for two days in 1998 for a mastectomy and underwent chemotherapy over the next five months. The mother of two daughters she felt so lucky just to be alive.

Anatomy and Physiology: Breast CancerToday, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer that affects women globally. Although breast cancer typically affects breast tissue, the disease can also spread to other organs and systems in the body (Lengacher et al., 2012). Some of the common risk factors that are associated with breast cancer include sex (females suffer from a far higher incidence), age, obesity, genetics (black women suffer from

Breast Cancer Treatment Breast cancer is not an illness which can be cured with medication, it is a fatal disease. If not detected at an early stage it is incurable. A famous Chinese proverb states "We cannot control the wind, but we have the power to adjust its sails"; in the same manner, we cannot prevent breast cancer, but it is in our power to take appropriate measures to reduce its

Overall sensitivity for whole-body and PET/CT was 96% and 93% respectively, while specificity was 87% and 88% respectively. Conclusions The study showed that both methods are relevant for detecting metastases in breast cancer patients, but also showed that the method chosen should be appropriate to the type of tumor which may be suspected based upon the laboratory and clinical findings. While the study found that both 1.5- and 3-tesla MRI scanning

Partial Mastectomy- a procedure that remove part of the breast that contains the cancer and some tissue around the affected tissue. This type of surgery is also called a segmental mastectomy (Breast Cancer Treatment). In addition the National Cancer Institute reports that patients who undergo the aforementioned types of surgeries may also have some lymph nodes removed (Breast Cancer Treatment). Another type of surgery that does not conserve the breast is the

Treatment Plan: The treatment plan should include medication for high blood pressure and diabetes. Indeed, according to some evidence, the long term usage of diuretic antihypertensives to reduce the presence of excess salts in the body can help to lower blood pressure. (Klatt, 1) Given that the subject of this discussion also suffers from an elevated risk of myocardial infarction, the danger of cardiac arrest or general heart failure is of greater concern than the presence of

As a woman enters her geriatric years, many unique problems are also faced. Her post-menopausal period leaves a woman with increased risk of osteoporosis, and hormone-replacement therapy may need to be considered or dismissed depending upon the needs and wellness of the individual women. Additionally, increased risk for obesity begins nearly at the adolescent period, when women's hormone loads change and often activity of childhood decreases. The incidence of
