Personal Interests Life Should Never Be Limited

¶ … Personal Interests Life should never be limited to just a few activities, and I have two interests/activities that I take great enjoyment in. One is in the development of various technologies and information regarding these technologies, including the development (with a few friends) of an mp3 system for people to use to share audiobooks -- the fact that I can put my knowledge and skills to practical ends that enable people to share information is very exciting to me.

I also enjoy playing the piano, which is very different from working with computers as there is total freedom in what "works" and what can be explored. While everyone has some sort of activity they engage in just for fun, there are several such activities that I engage in with this enthusiasm.

One of these, which is fairly closely related to my education, is the development of various technologies and gathering knowledge about these technologies; as one example, I have become an avid and regular reader of the Renewable Energy World magazine that provides up-to-date information on science related to renewable fuels and other energy sources. Piano playing is another just-for-fun hobby of mine that is perhaps somewhat less related to my education, and that provides a greater sense of freedom and enjoyment because of this.

I am certainly not the only piano player at MIT; many students find playing the piano and other musical instruments a very rewarding pastime that provides a great deal of enjoyment and an escape from the studies and the other work that must go into a successful time at the school. This is only one of several activities that I engage in purely for pleasure, though. I also enjoy engaging in certain scientific and technological pursuits outside of my coursework.

An interest in renewable energy sources gives me a great deal of pleasurable reading material and even led to a research project in biofuels that really kindled my passion in the area. Renewable energy is a major passion of mine, as is the sharing of information for the betterment of the world generally.

I have engaged in just-for-fun research both in the area of biofuels and in developing an mp3 system for use in uploading and sharing audiobooks, both of which I believe have a positive impact on the world and which also kindled my passions both the first time I encountered such technologies and still keep them enflamed today.
