¶ … Reach Your Goals with Humor
Humor has really somewhat of an elusive definition. For some, a simple action or phrase can be humorous. For others, humor involves irony, blasphemy, profanity, or even comes at another's expense. But humor is not usually thought of as a tool that can have such a far-reaching impact as to help one's self reach their goals. Human beings are the only species on the planet that can appreciate or enjoy humor. And it has been proven that laughing helps to keep a person healthy and mentally grounded. So why do so many people neglect humor as one of the most important and powerful tools that can be sharpened for use in life, and in reaching one's goals?
Since human psychology predicates that all human beings have a sense of humor, in some form or another, it is quite useful to be able to take advantage of this fact in certain situations. For instance, if you can laugh and joke with a co-worker, or manager, they are likely to form an emotional bond or alliance with you, given that you can connect with them humorously. In this way, human beings are able to connect in a unique fashion, and in doing so, are often able to tear down the mental barriers that separate each unique world view or view point. It is therefore possible to say that humor, like music and mathematics, is a universal language. It can touch human beings across the globe that would normally be at odds with one another. It can also ignite a room full of laughter and unite a group of people in one cause or thought.
Humor also has a positive effect on one's own life. When the going gets tough, the tough get humorous. Not that people should make fun of their own situations, no matter how good or bad, but that humans function better when they can see the humor in every day life. When they begin to understand that humor is all around them, and begin to take themselves less seriously, they can begin to open up to the many other wonderful experiences around them when they otherwise may not have been able to. Humor is a key that unlocks a different facet existence.
All great comedians and humorists have one thing in common: they are able to take something humorous, adapt it to their current audience or context, and unite a group of people through laughter. It is this shared pleasurable experience that creates a bond between the audience and the comedian as well as between each audience member themselves. They are all sharing the same experience, and through humor, are able to view it through a specific and often hilarious lens.
