The debate about stretching typically revolves around one central question: which is better — static or dynamic stretching?

Defining Flexibility, Dynamic Stretching, and Static Stretching

What exactly is flexibility, the fitness component that stretching is supposed to enhance? "Flexibility is the range of motion possible around a specific joint or series of articulations. Flexibility is specific to a given joint or movement. A person may not be able to function normally if a joint lacks normal movement" ("Stretching and Flexibility," ExRx, 2007). While "dynamic stretching incorporates movements that mimic a specific sport or exercise in an exaggerated yet controlled manner" and is "often included during the warm-up or in preparation for a sports event," the "static technique involves passively stretching a muscle to the point of mild discomfort by holding it in a maximal stretch for an extended period" ("Stretching and Flexibility," ExRx, 2007).

A useful contrast between the two types of stretching can be seen in a runner preparing for a hard workout or a race. A runner engaged in dynamic stretching might perform chest-to-knee running drills or exaggerated skipping, while a runner using static stretching might lean against a wall in a lunge to stretch the quadriceps and hamstrings. Dynamic also implies motion: dynamic stretching may include arm swings, knee rotations, and neck circles, whereas static stretching is traditionally performed with a limited range of motion and certainly not with fast movements (Campbell, 2007). Athletes in sports requiring pinpoint reflexes and reactions — such as basketball and soccer players — are often devoted proponents of dynamic stretching.

Stretching and Injury Prevention

Contrary to popular belief, stretching before a workout does not appear to decrease the occurrence of injury. The risk of injury seems to be roughly equal for those who stretch and those who do not stretch before exercise. The warm-up — not stretching — appears to be the more important deterrent for injury when performed before an exercise bout. "Stretching seems to offer more long-term benefit such as maintaining functional flexibility and correcting particular muscular imbalances" ("Stretching and Flexibility," ExRx, 2007). In other words, some physical fitness trainers argue that the best warm-up is not stretching per se, but rather — for a runner, for example — taking a light jog at a pace much slower than the actual workout.

Dynamic vs. Static Stretching in Warm-Ups and Competition

This does not mean most trainers believe athletes should disregard stretching. Rather, both dynamic and static stretching should be performed with the goal of enhancing flexibility as a fitness component, not primarily as a warm-up. Other trainers do believe that both forms of stretching have a place within a physical fitness program, even before and after exercise, provided the stretching begins at a slow pace.

Before a competition, dynamic stretching that emphasizes the muscles and skills used during the event — such as arm swings and hip rotations for a basketball player, or sprinting and skipping movements for a runner — can aid the pre-competition warm-up by increasing joint mobility and body temperature without tiring the athlete or creating excessive tension. Static stretching, by contrast, can be incorporated into warm-ups for training sessions (Campbell, 2007). Static stretching is thought to more directly enhance long-term flexibility, but it is less effective as an aid to immediate performance or as a means of raising body temperature before competition.

The debate between static and dynamic stretching is not a competition, much as some trainers might like to make it seem. It is a question of who, what, and when. For non-competitive athletes — the weekend warriors likely to rush into exercise with tight muscles — slower static stretches may be best. For competitive athletes, dynamic stretching pre-competition is essential in order to avoid the slowing effect of muscle elongation. The athlete's goals also matter: to enhance reflexes and blood flow to the joints, dynamic stretching is superior; for building long-term flexibility, static stretching is the better tool. And in terms of timing, dynamic stretching before a workout may be superior for many athletes, while static stretching afterward provides an ideal cool-down.
