St. Jude Children's Research Hospital: Performance Measures
Input
Jude Children's Research Hospital currently operates on a budget of approximately one-and-a-half million dollars a day, which is nearly five-hundred-and-fifty million dollars every year (SJCRH 2010). The vast majority of the operating funds come from the American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities, or ALSAC, which has been the funding organization of the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital since the organization's founding.
Output
Research conducted by the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has managed to drastically increase the survival rates in many childhood cancers, as well as other maladies, showing much faster progress than many other research hospitals (SJCRH 2010). Eighty-one cents out of every contributed dollar has gone directly to funding research and treatment efforts over the past five years, which makes the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital one of the most efficient charities overall, and not simply one of the nation's most effective research and treatment hospitals (SJCRH 2010). The organization's input to output ratio compares quite favorably to other similar organizations.
Outcome
The result of the well-used funds has been the prolonged life and often the complete recovery of many individuals treated at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Since the creation of the hospital in 1962, the research center has gone through several expansions, largely driven by the effective use of increasing fundraising efforts and successes, and now operates on a much higher budget servicing a far broader range of medical issues and a much larger number of patients (SJCRH 2010). Survival rates of patients at the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for many of the cancers treated there are significantly higher than in other hospitals, which is another highly favorable outcome (SJCRH 2010).
Efficiency
As previously detailed above, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital manages to put eighty-one cents of every dollar raised by ALSAC to direct use in treating patients at the hospital and researching new treatments (SJCRH 2010). This makes the organization one of the most successful and efficient both as a charity and in the hospital/medical research field. Volunteer efforts help to minimize costs, and streamlined administration with a clear dedication to the true and full mission of the hospital contribute to the hospital's efficiency.
